I read the study just now. It is a truly stupid paper, and a very poorly designed survey. As far as I can tell, the question asked to determine whether the scientist is "techno optimist" did not distinguish amongst the forms of technology. For example, heat pumps, wind power, photovoltaics,

The word ‘torrid’ is much underused, imo. Torrid affairs are almost always exclusively between actors, artists, or occasionally, writers. For everyone else (eg: She had a torrid affair with a quantity surveyor from Leeds) the word transforms any sentence into pure Alan Bennett.

Since everyone’s arguing about speed cameras, let’s keep a couple facts in mind: 1) Research show that camera enforcement is much more popular than the media implies – in suburbs as well as cities. Lesson: Don’t conflate a few angry car owners with “public opinion.” (cont'd)

Automated Traffic Enforcement Is More Popular Than You Think
Cameras that ticket drivers who run red lights and speed are effective and widely popular with city residents. So why are they banned in so many places?

Ian, this is practically impossible to read. Alt text makes it much easier. Select, copy, paste, add to alt text. Takes seconds. And you can ask settings to force you to do it before posting.
One reason for the tension is the "Zionism is racism" motion, which has dominated coverage of the party over recent months, and is expected to come to a vote on Sunday. Despite all the controversy, most insiders believe the motion will pass. There is strong support among members and Polanski himself has been using similar language in recent debates.
What's in it: The motion defines Zionism as support for "an ethnonationalist Jewish State in historic Palestine to the exclusion and/or domination of the non-Jewish population"; says it should be treated "like any other type of racism"; and commits the party to a single Palestinian state. Polanski has backed the motion but will support amendments stating that Palestinians should determine what a final settlement with Israel looks like, alongside protections for Jewish members who identify as Zionist. Left Foot Forward has a full explainer here.
The group pushing the motion, Greens for Palestine, has been urging people to join the party specifically to pass it, as the Guardian's Peter Walker reports. One official told Playbook many of the new joiners are "incredibly hostile" and will be "pouring into the conference hall, shouting at people." A senior Green Party organizer said they had gone as far as making "plans to hide" away from the main conference floor during the debate because of concerns for their safety.
Safe space: A Green Party spokesperson said they expected the debate to be passionate because it is a "very emotive subject," but insisted safeguards were in place to keep attendees safe.
adding that they "expect no physical violence." Sounds like one to watch.

You are missing the point - if you are in a private hospital in the UK and your condition deteriorates so that you need to be in intensive care you get transferred to an NHS hospital and then the tax payer picks up the bill - even if you were in for cosmetic surgery that goes wrong.
