One of the most underappreciated unforeseen consequences of the smartphone/streaming/social media era is the elimination of boredom as a key driver of creativity. Without boredom, there just isn't enough impetus for most people do go out and learn and do things.

Not since 1992 has this much of Congress headed for the exits before an election. 100 members — 84 House, 16 Senate — have left or announced departures since January 2025. That's 18% of the 119th Congress.

A Trump administration report on noncitizen voting amounts to a clear admission that there weren't enough such votes to swing the 2020 election (via Bloomberg Opinion)

Noncitizens Don’t Sway Elections, Even in a Pro-Trump Tally
Last month, the Census Bureau published a strange little document claiming that “over 24,000” votes were cast by noncitizens in the 2020 US general election. The anonymous report has come under fire for its provenance and methods: It was reportedly produced outside of regular Census Bureau channels by political appointees and staffers at a think tank with close ties to President Donald Trump, using an approach that, according to one former high-level bureau official, was likely to turn up far mo

The business model of spam fundraising depends on hooking a group of elderly donors who give at a disturbing frequency, summing to sizable amounts. Most of them don't appear especially wealthy. I've compiled a handful of these cases. There are thousands of cases like these in the FEC data. 🧵
A data graphic detailing recurring political donations by a 79-year-old Kansas resident charged 45,331 times since 2018 for a total of $153,856. The top timeline chart shows daily donation frequency from November 2019 through December 2020, highlighting a sharp increase leading up to the 2020 election that peaked at 352 charges in a single day. The bottom horizontal bar chart lists the top 12 recipient committees out of 485 total—led by the Congressional Black Caucus PAC ($7,521 across 2,250 charges), NDTC, and Stop Republicans—noting that the 10 largest recipients represent only 24% of all contributions, with the remainder dispersed across hundreds of PACs, party committees, and candidates.
