Start your week with us in the Bureau for our new series, Bureau Bites. These informal, 45min online gatherings are open to all, whether you're a postgraduate student, a heritage manager or a senior consultant. Keep an eye on our LinkedIn account where we'll post a link to a short text (30 min read) the week before we meet. We understand how dynamic, energetic and enterprising (ie busy) we all are so please join the conversation even you haven't been able to make time to read and reflect in advance. Readings will be a mix of websites, blogs, reports, excerpts from academic papers.

The aim is to reconnect us with our communities of practice and to create space for the kind of thinking we might not be able to do on the daily grind. We invite participants to start a light-touch reflective journal to help document these conversations, which you may find useful in your work.

These gatherings also mark the start of ButCH's journey towards being a business partnership and launch of our redesigned website https://37looestreet.org/home/butch/

At this point, should the question be ‘what WILL British archaeology look like under the Reform government’? How can a fragmented occupation like archaeology (commercial, HE, volunteer sector) counter white supremacist narratives? Can we be activists or should archaeology be politically neutral?

A really rather beautiful ghost sign just popped up on Magdalen Street, thus confirming its position as the best street in the city again for yet another year. Early c20th painted and gold foiled glass. Seems it was covered over in the 1960s. It’s been a Chinese chemist for years.
The ladies & gents hairdressers sign on the Golden Dog Lane exposure, which is pretty much intact. The frontage, the glass is cracked in the middle, but still readable and in decent condition. It reads 32 - Hairdressers - George Clapham - Perfumers, in gold leaf on green.Perfumers - 3232 Hairdressers.

CfP for our TAG Exeter session 'After the Election: Archaeology & Cultural Heritage in a Post-Reform UK'. Imagine it's 2029, Reform wins a landslide election victory, the Department for British Culture has oversight of all cultural output. What next for archaeology, museums & cultural heritage?
Screenshot of the call for papers for the session for Exeter TAG, which says:
This session imagines the archaeological and heritage implications of a Reform UK government following its victory at the 2029 general election. The newly created ‘Department for British Culture’ oversees urgent revisions to Britain’s heritage and cultural sectors, operating under a mandate to suppress ‘woke’ approaches to the past. Institutional overhauls are in progress at museums and archives, at National Trust properties, in media, and publishing, and the DfBC are revising how the past is taught in schools as part of the new ‘National Curriculum Reformed’. Government policies call for the withdrawal of funding from museums and heritage sites that address difficult histories, particularly those related to colonialism, the Atlantic slave trade, and migration. New national guidance has been issued that prioritises narratives of ‘traditional’ British culture, economic and wartime achievement, and Christian heritage.

This session seeks reflections on this imagined future, focused on its implications for the present:
Is this prediction accurate? To what extent? How can we better understand the structures and dynamics that shape the far-right framing and usage of the past? In what locales, and through what narratives, is the past mobilised towards far-right political goals? What about in 2029?
Can archaeologists contribute to avoiding a future such as this? Where are we going wrong? How might we prepare? What does activist-archaeologist resistance to far-right state power look like?
What are the political responsibilities of those who work with the past? How can we attempt to prevent political harms and marginalisation through our work? Conversely, should archaeology remain politically neutral?
