Ivy is a really good source of diptera, including hoverflies, and bees at this time of year Besides Honey bees today there were lots of Ivy bees along with Calliphora vomitoria, Myathropa flora, Eristalis tenax etc

Always stay alert… Walking past some ivy on a southeast London street. My subconscious discerns a micromoth fizzing. Turns out to be Clepsis dumicolana. Turns out there are a dozen. Relatively recent, ivy-feeding colonist. And new for me.

Favourite plant this year was Herniaria glabra (Smooth Ruturewort). A small and insignificant plant which repays patient scrutiny along the forest rides on the Norfolk Brecks, looking carefully for the acid green patches of this plant. Such a bonus if you find it! #favouriteplants #wildflowerhour

One of my favourite miners today - Bucculatrix frangulella on Buckthorn. They make purple spiral mines initially. Some are just finishing and the larvae will now window feed on the leaf. Soon the leaves will look messy with lots of translucent windows where they fed. #norfolkmoths

Worth checking Goosefoot and Orache regularly for mines. Chrysoesthia drurella and Pegomya sp. have appeared in the garden in the last few days Chrysoesthia form gut like galleries whereas Pegomya form smeary blotches! Turn the leaf over to look for the whiteeggs clustered together in Pegomya

Our largest moth the Death's Head Hawk most obvious when compared as a pupa to Convovulus & Hummingbird Hawks. The Convovulus pupa has a 'jug handle' extension where its 10 cm long tongue develops. The DHH lacks this as it has a very short tongue used to suck honey from honeybee comb.
