Now with alt text, as this fabulous interview richly deserves.
Take me to the moment where you finally arrived on the beach after swimming so far. What did that feel like?

A little uncomfortable because my legs gave out and I fell onto some barnacles, so that was fun. And then there was a bunch of people, so that was wonderfully overstimulating, so I had to put on a smile — "Yay, I'm suffering on the inside! Too many people!" Had to pretend I was an extrovert. Now, you had a support team nearby on a boat. How reassuring was that for you during this process?

They were great. They did everything that they were supposed to. They had to give me food every 30 minutes just to keep my blood sugar levels up. And because I was nauseous, I did a lot of, "no, I don't want to eat, go away!" But they forced me to eat. So that was good.

Did you think about giving up?

Oh, God, no. I was more so just thinking, "oh, can this be done yet? Nope, still not there."I just swam through the stream. Otherwise, if I didn't keep swimming, I was going to be sitting in my own vomit.

What made you decide that you wanted to do this particular stretch?

I just think every time I've ever been on the ferry, I thought, I kind of want to jump in and swim across. And I've had a lot of people tell me that's not possible. So I think a lot of it was spite. Right before jumping in, I thought "this is going to be the worst day of my life," and then when I got in the water, I thought, "oh, it's not too bad temperature-wise, so I shouldn't have any problem making it to the other side." I was really concerned about hypothermia.

Melanie, you don't feel great now, you didn't feel great when you finished, and you were feeling dread at the beginning and worried about hypothermia. Why did you do this?

I guess I thrive on self-loathing.

Highlighted by Rob Freund: "Our system rests on the premise that what is said to influence a decision is said openly, on the record, where the other side may hear it and respond."
A hidden instruction of this kind is, in substance, a secret communication to the very apparatus by which a matter may be read and weighed, delivered through a channel the opposing party can neither see nor answer. In that respect it is similar to an ex parte communication. A statement opposing counsel knows nothing about
and has no opportunity to respond to. Our system rests on the premise that what is said to influence a decision is said openly, on the record, where the other side may hear it and respond. A communication deployed in secret, kept from the adversary's sight, offends that premise.

Consider how plainly improper it would be for a party to arrange for an automated agent to communicate covertly with a juror during trial.

While there is no juror in these specific pleadings, the principle is the same. It is a concealed communication to those who decide, or to the tools on which they rely, clandestinely pleaded outside the knowledge of the other side and, indeed, the Court, itself.

This is a real and present concern, even beyond the legal profession. Prompt injection through hidden text has, in a very short time, become a familiar feature of ordinary life and reports of it are now commonplace. Computer-security organizations rank prompt injection as the foremost vulnerability of artificial-intelligence applications, and they specifically catalog white-on-white text, hidden
formatting, and non-printing characters as means of hiding instructions that the software processes while people remain unaware of them.

In hiring, employers report finding tens of thousands of resumes each year carrying hidden white-text instructions in tiny point font, telling an automated screener to advance or praise the applicant. One hiring manager's account of finding such prompts buried in applications circulated widely in a Fast Company article just this past week. In education, a history professor recently concealed a white-text
instruction in an examination [truncated]

Did a cartoon for @josie.zone related to her upcoming @beckbook.com, the book about Beck.
A woman says "I'm being stalked by the thing from the Odelay cover. A mop of hair hovers above the sidewalk behind her. A man points out "That's just a Komondor dog in mid-jump." The man goes to pet the entity saying "Good boy!" His hand gets absorbed in the haird cloud with a GRRRSH. His entire body is sucked into the entity. The woman cries his name "GARY!"
