One thing about Copenhagen is that there's tons of dense housing but you *never* find it fronting a busy road with cars racing past, which describes about 90% of the apartments in the US. They manage to make it feel tucked away, private, cozy. (These are all from Sluseholmen, my dream neighborhood.)

Bad apples? Seattle Police 'not a healthy tree' says city council member
Chants of "defund S-P-D" have become a common message at protests in Seattle, and for the first time the idea is getting serious attention from the city council.

There have always been people who say they'll "innovate" new ways to do reporters' jobs, from crowdsourcing to piecework news snippets to listicles. Sara Nelson's clumsily biased simulacrum of a human-reported local news site is just as obviously doomed as all those efforts to replace journalists.

NEW: Alexis Mercedes Rinck has proposed an amendment to Rob Saka's SAFER Streets Act that would give the City Traffic Engineer explicit authority to implement street changes in historic districts (Pioneer Square, Pike Place) without getting the approval of the local boards.
Effect: Currently, physical changes in designated historic, special review, and
landmark districts are reviewed by community volunteer boards facilitated through
the Department of Neighborhoods. The authority of the City Traffic Engineer to
construct traffic control devices, such as markers, signs and signal devices, used
to inform, guide and control traffic, including pedestrians, motor vehicle drivers,
and bicyclists, in these areas is unspecified. This amendment would clarify that
the City Traffic Engineer’s authority is over all City right-of-way, including
designated historic, special review, and landmark districts. It would also specify
that traffic control devices in such areas are not subject to landmark designation,
nor do construction of traffic control devices require a Certificate of Approval1. The
amendment allows the Traffic Engineer to coordinate with the Department of
Neighborhoods or the landmark preservation boards to minimize design conflicts
in alignment with the historic, cultural, architectural, or geographic significance of
the district.

Our society's unfathomable cruelty to homeless people is not just morally unjustifiable, but more expensive than housing people would be. Cruelty against the homeless is an unaffordable luxury. Abandoning homeless people to avoid offending the Protestant work ethic is an unaffordable luxury.

Pike Place should put people first year-round. In SDOT’s June survey, 98% of 5,403 respondents supported vehicle barriers. And among 224 Market businesses & staff who responded, 96% agreed. Yet the proposal for this winter would allow more general car traffic into the Market.

Op-Ed: How Pike Place Market Can Thrive in the Winter Without Car Traffic
SDOT is weighing a plan that would fully reopen Pike Place to cars Monday through Thursday from October to March. Here why that approach is wrong and how the Market will thrive with year-round pedestrianization.

Part of the reason other nations have rich social safety nets is that they also have a sense of shared civic identity that comes from shared public space. When great parks are handed over to cars, people in them become more guarded, more defensive, and stingier in all kinds of unexpected ways.

Good news for the 14.5% of people who drive to Pike Place Market (and don’t want to walk, bike or bus there): There is a public parking garage with 800 spaces (including disabled parking spaces) literally attached to the Market. It takes 1:20 to get from the garage to the shops ⏱️

I tried to find common ground with others on this panel tonight, but this is one area of fundamental disagreement. Unnecessary car traffic pushing through the Market degrades the experience for everyone else, and limits the potential to create a more welcoming street for people to shop and enjoy
lost californian driving through the middle of the market
