Not every pedestrian street will work year-round, at least not yet. Some need to be strengthened/revitalized first. The street has to already be reasonably successful as a sustainable summer people-magnet. Vancouver’s Granville Street isn’t ready yet. Seattle’s Pike Place IS ready to be year-round.

did you know the commission’s guidelines refer to pedestrians 20 times? meanwhile, the word “parking” appears just once, and only to dictate that it should not compete with or replace pedestrian access and Market character

Tomorrow! The Pike Place Market Historical Commission looks at the plan to allow more car traffic on Pike Place this winter. You can send/make a comment: www.seattle.gov/neighborhood... To be frank, it's not a commission I expect to push to make the plan better but they should still hear from you

Wilson Order Tees Up Sweeping Traffic Safety Changes, Accelerating Projects
The five-part order directs changes across multiple City departments intended to improve safety outcomes. Most notably, SDOT will speed up work on a slate of Vision Zero projects, and start to include intersection daylighting in routine work moving forward.

No one is proposing old-timey cop-on-your-block foot patrols. Seattle is meeting its 7-minute 911 goal. We already prohibit "camping" and sweep people pointlessly from place to place. And crime is down. But if you ask people leading questions that imply lack of action, you get the result you want.

The Pike Place bureaucratic ecosystem is unlike any other in the city: a half-dozen boards and organizations with a little bit of power all pointing a gun at each other. At the end of the day, it's hard for city hall to rise above that.

i wish the folks recommending and supporting this strategy would consider that changing the rules every season and every day of the week and hour to hour and event to event is goddamn confusing for literally everyone and basically impossible to communicate.

I read the Pike Place Market Vehicle Access Pilot Evaluation Technical Memo. It's a great data source. But the UW Urban Freight Lab's recommendation to make access control seasonal is 1) unsupported by evidence and 2) based solely on (perceived) sales without consideration of other community values.

Saka, closing out, says "even if it's not a right, we heard dozens of people today say, from their perspective, that it is a right." That is not actually a point. It's describing people's self-righteous insistence that losing a delay tactic that's rather bespoke in Seattle is a gross injustice.

I will note that, as others have, that there is a stark, stark contrast in the ages and assets of delay supporters and delay opponents. Those who want more ways to appeal and delay housing are overwhelmingly older house owners; those who want housing are younger renters.

Do we really want to give everyone and every business in the City the ability to negotiate and have legal leverage and extract concessions? We know who is more like to use those legal tools. It is more likely going to be wealthy and more connected folks who already have more influence than most.
