Does radical right success change attitudes or the local climate? Stefan Dahlberg, @hilmal.bsky.social & @polhosc.bsky.social examine Sweden, finding contextual alignment, not persuasion. Read OPEN ACCESS: buff.ly/rI91be4 @polstudiesassoc.bsky.social #polsky #polsci #RadicalRight
"Abstract
Electoral success of radical right parties is often argued to normalize previously stigmatized anti-immigration attitudes. Yet, it remains unclear whether such normalization reflects genuine within-individual persuasion or shifts in the local climate of political expression. We address this question by linking highly disaggregated district-level vote shares to individual-level panel survey data from Sweden (2018–2022), a period marked by sustained growth and partial normalization of the Sweden Democrats. Cross-sectional analyses reveal pronounced contextual patterns: Restrictive immigration attitudes are more prevalent in districts with higher local radical right support, particularly among voters who do not support the party, while core supporters remain comparatively stable. However, first-difference panel analyses provide little evidence that changes in local radical right support are associated with attitudinal change. The findings suggest that what appears as normalization in ecological analyses is more consistent with contextual alignment than with rapid persuasion, clarifying the micro-foundations of radical right normalization."

New book out 🔥 The Fascist Zeitgeist. Authoritarian Legacies and the Iberian Far Right. (Elements in the History and Politics of Fascism @universitypress.cambridge.org) How is the success of the Iberian far right linked to the memory of Franco and Salazar? doi.org/10.1017/9781009588072
The image shows, on the right half, the book's cover, with fascist architecture from Rome, which is the signature image used by the series on "The History and Politics of Fascism". The left half of the image shows the book's back, that includes the following summary:
The far right is achieving unprecedented electoral success, even in countries once considered immune such as Spain and Portugal. For decades, the stigma surrounding the long dictatorships of António Salazar and Francisco Franco seemed to inoculate the Iberian Peninsula against far-right mobilisation, yet Chega and VOX have shown that collective memory evolves – and stigma fades. This Element argues that understanding the far right's global rise requires attention to authoritarian nostalgia: a longing for an idealised authoritarian past. When activated by credible political actors with sufficient media visibility, this sentiment can generate support for far-right movements even in societies with a collective memory firmly condemning their authoritarian past. Using original survey data, the Element shows how contemporary far-right forces mobilise the ghosts of authoritarianism to erode democratic norms, revealing the enduring power of collective memory in shaping political behaviour.

First page of the journal article "From the center to the fringes: A comparative test of attitudinal explanations for mainstream-to-challenger defection" by Denis Cohen, Werner Krause, and Anna Aigner, published in Electoral Studies. The page shows the journal head, author affiliations at the University of Mannheim and the University of Potsdam, keywords, a link to the replication dataset, and the full abstract.Dot plot showing net balances of vote switching between mainstream and challenger parties, in percentage points, across 16 west European elections from 1973 to 2025. Each election is a point with a 95% credible interval, ordered left to right from most negative to most positive. Values run from about −6 to +15 points; positive values mean net gains for challengers. German elections are labeled individually and mostly sit between −4 and +4 points. Germany's February 2025 election, highlighted in red, is a clear outlier at nearly +10 points, placing it among the highest in the series alongside the Netherlands 2002, Greece 2012, Denmark 1973, and Italy 1992.

🏳️‍🌈 When does rejecting homosexuality predict radical-right support? Álvaro Calvo-Rodríguez studies 21 European countries: the link grows where gender issues polarise and radical-right parties lean on religious tradition — and weakens when they stress Islam instead. 🔗 doi.org/10.1080/0140...
Description of the article "When does rejection of homosexuality matter? Gendered opportunity structures and radical-right support" by Álvaro Calvo-Rodríguez, published online first in West European Politics.
Figure 3. Small-multiple line charts for the same 16 countries, comparing the same rejection-of-homosexuality link (solid line) with within-country change in radical-right parties' anti-Islam salience (dashed line). In many countries, including Spain, Sweden and Switzerland, rising anti-Islam salience coincides with a flatter or weaker link.
Figure 4. Three-panel line chart of the predicted probability of feeling close to a radical-right party across levels of rejection of homosexuality, for high versus low anti-Islam salience, at low, mean and high gender polarisation. Where gender polarisation is low, high anti-Islam salience flattens or even reverses the link; where it is high, rejection of homosexuality still goes with greater radical-right closeness under high anti-Islam salience.
