#VendrediLecture 📚 How can parties expand their volunteer base? Drawing from field experiments in 🇳🇱, @jonnekamphorst.bsky.social & @hlarreguy.bsky.social show personal calls are effective, in particular to recruit younger members. Open Acess in @polanalysis.bsky.social: doi.org/10.1017/pan....
Get Out the Volunteer: Encouraging Diverse Political Party Activism

Published online by Cambridge University Press: 09 September 2026

Abstract

Political parties in advanced democracies face a dual challenge: fewer citizens are willing to volunteer, and those who remain active are disproportionately older and male. This is troubling given the central role that volunteers play in campaigns and party processes. Whether party leaders can recruit a larger and more diverse activist base remains an open question. We partnered with a major party in the Netherlands and conducted two field experiments before the 2021 general and 2022 municipal elections, targeting over 35,000 party members. The party randomized whether members received a personal call, an email or both. Results show that calls—where members could voice their opinions—increased volunteer sign-up rates (83% in Study 1 and 361% in Study 2), especially among younger members. By contrast, emails had no effect. These findings clarify mixed evidence in the literature, suggesting that voice opportunities are key to expanding and diversifying the activist base.

Book talk

Thursday 17 September 2026 | 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm CET

Hybrid
Compulsory Registration

Rome, promenades sociologiques explores the traces of the longue durée of urban policies in Rome, inviting readers to discover not only the city’s historic streets and landscapes but also the web of narratives through which the city has been imagined and transformed. It focuses on the past fifty years—a period marked by episodes of strong mayoral activism—while providing the historical context needed to understand the city’s longer-term development. In Rome, decisions and interventions made in the distant past continue to shape the city, often with consequences that extend far beyond the political moment in which they were conceived.Despite its universal cultural significance, the Italian capital does not conform to the conventional model of the global city. It is neither a major economic nor a financial centre. Its exceptional historical heritage coexists with a distinctive interweaving of dense urban structures and rural landscapes. Unlike most Western European capitals, Rome bears relatively few marks of industrialisation and has instead been shaped to a significant extent by land interests, fragmented development, and informal forms of urbanisation. These distinctive characteristics make Rome a particularly rich case for understanding how historical legacies, political choices, institutional capacities, social dynamics, and contemporary pressures interact in the making of the city.

Rome thus challenges contemporary urban theories that have often either dissolved the city into the broader category of “the urban” or opposed the city to nature. This book takes a different approach, treating Rome neither as a unique exception nor as a city simply determined by general laws. Rather, it examines how geo-historical features, socio-cultural dynamics, political choices, and external opportunities and constraints combine in the making of the city. What is distinctive about Rome is precisely this combination of opposites: a global city without a major financial or economic base; a long-term alternation between periods of strong political decision-making and weak or uneven implementation; and relatively weak public institutions alongside an inventive, resourceful, and remarkably rich civil society. Such combinations are more commonly associated with cities of the Global South. Rome therefore unsettles conventional distinctions between North and South, formal and informal, strong and weak government, and global and peripheral cities. It offers, in this sense, a particularly revealing case for exploring the complexities of contemporary urban life.

Criminal governance in Russian prisons
Elena Racheva and Federico Varese

Abstract
How is order produced in prisons where formal authority is weak, fragmented or strategically constrained? Drawing on 85 handwritten edicts of the Russian criminal fraternity vory-v-zakone and interviews with former prisoners, this article analyses the production of extra-legal order in Russian penal institutions. We show that the vory-v-zakone constitute a durable, institutionalised and trans-local system of criminal governance that coexists with, and at times supplements or contests, state authority. Their governance relies on reputation, communication networks, coercion and redistributive mechanisms, producing a form of authority that many inmates perceive as more predictable and, paradoxically, more humane than formal prison administration.

Abstract
Recently, the socio- economic agenda of populist radical right parties (PRRPs) has attracted growing scholarly interest, yet many studies focus specifically on positions on welfare policies. It is often argued that economic issues are of secondary importance to PRRPs, or that their
positions are deliberately blurred to maximize electoral appeal. This article qualifies these assumptions by showing that PRRPs' economic policies are underpinned by a more consistent ideological logic than is commonly acknowledged. Drawing on a longitudinal qualitative
analysis of four established PRRPs in Belgium, France, Italy and the Netherlands, we examine party positions across five economic policy domains. We find that PRRPs combine pro-market commitments with nationalist-protectionist elements. These issue positions are rendered
coherent through a recurring repertoire of interpretative
frames – economic chauvinism, populism and producerism – which operate as higher-level justificatory schemata. These frames provide an enduring discursive structure through which PRRPs reconcile flexibility in
policy content with ideological coherence.

RESEARCH ARTICLE
Repression as the Closing of the Public Space and Sphere: The Multi-dimensional Repression of Climate Civil Disobedience in Britain
Lucien Thabourey
Sciences Po, Paris
ABSTRACT: The concept of soft repression has broadened the study of social movement policing by drawing attention to strategies that go beyond states’overt strategies to suppress or control activism. However, the most subtle and insidious practices are often examined in isolation from more coercive tactics, and the meaning of “soft” remains ambiguous –frequently conflated with extra-state, covert, or discursive forms of repression. This article draws on the case of British climate civil disobedience policing to argue for a more integrated approach. I propose that repression should be analysed along two dimensions: repression in the public space, which restricts movements’ access to the streets, and repression in the public sphere, which seeks to delegitimise them. Idemonstrate that these distinct forms of repression can overlap, precede, or reinforce one another; operate with varying levels of visibility; be enacted by both state and non-state actors; and provoke specific responses from movements.
