I don’t understand what you could possibly mean by ”more pertinent” considering that you didn't read the article. Why wouldn’t you just say nothing? Every minor online annoyance must be publicly commented on and blamed on whoever is nearby? Do you ever examine these impulses or merely act on them?

The new NSF letter is catastrophic. It shifts NSF towards applied research (which is NOT NSF’s mandate), will funnel money to business and away from universities, promises to push even more money to AI, and policital appointments can overrule entire panels. Also, golden tickets overruling everything

As we approach the 25th anniversary of 9/11, I want to highlight a memorial not far from my home. 4 days after 9/11, a racist shot and killed Balbir Singh Sodhi, a husband, father of five, and beloved member of his local Sikh community. His murder was the first hate crime in response to the attacks.

Democrats use consultants like many people use LLMs and suffer many of the same consequences. A life spent having the room read for you (badly) has left them fundamentally incapable of doing it themselves.

Just as the best salesmen never lie, and the best conmen truly believe their own stories, perhaps the best AI researchers must create their own deceivers and believe their own creations." (Why We Fear AI, p. 36) 9/9
Of course, the problem was, in a sense, foreseen before dig-
ital computers even ran on transistors. In 1950, Alan Turing
famously proposed what would become known as the Turing
test: an observer is tasked with corresponding, in text form, with
two characters A and B. One of them is a person, and the other
is the machine in question. The observer’s task is to decide which
one is which. As is so often the case, the ideas behind the test must
have been in the air in some sense. Essentially the same idea, called
ABX testing, was proposed by two researchers at Bell Labs (of the
transistor). Munson and Gardner published their test one month
before Turing’s paper: here, a person is first presented with two
known stimuli, A and B. Then they are presented with stimulus
X, and asked to decide whether X is an A or a B.In their case, Munson and Gardner were concerned with audi-
tory signals. The ABX test can be used to investigate the hearing of
participants—say, if you want to know what the highest frequency
is that someone can reliably detect. More commonly, however,
the test is used to evaluate the quality of lossy audio encodings
like MP3 (an encoding that includes only a part of the original

signal). The same is, of course, true for Turing’s test—perhaps
we could use it to test people for their ability to detect comput-
er-simulated faux persons—but generally, it is thought of as a test
to be passed by the machine in question. From that perspective,
it is clear that the machine’s task isn’t to “think” or be “general
purpose” (neither of which is a particularly well-scoped task).
Instead, the machine’s task is to fool the observer into saying it’s
the person. In other words, sidestepping the problem of scoping
“general purpose machines,” “thinking” or “intelligence” means
living in the liminal space between perception (by a person) and
deception (of a person). Perhaps the occult desire for animating
our golems lurks in the background still: what else is the Turing
test, but the desire to make the machine come to life? And once
the AI golem appears animated, who holds the secrets, who bears
that arcane animating knowledge that even the researchers profess
not to have? Who is left, but the machine itself! Just as the best
salesmen never lie, and the best conmen truly believe their own
stories, perhaps the best AI researchers must create their own
deceivers and believe their own creations.
