For National Poetry Day, Frank O'Hara
Poem [“Lana Turner has collapsed!”]

By Frank O’Hara
Lana Turner has collapsed!
I was trotting along and suddenly
it started raining and snowing
and you said it was hailing
but hailing hits you on the head
hard so it was really snowing and
raining and I was in such a hurry
to meet you but the traffic
was acting exactly like the sky
and suddenly I see a headline
lana turner has collapsed!
there is no snow in Hollywood
there is no rain in California
I have been to lots of parties
and acted perfectly disgraceful
but I never actually collapsed
oh Lana Turner we love you get up

The UK's AI minister just made a big and important admission on AI & copyright, which creatives around the country will celebrate: "It is currently illegal to develop a frontier large language model based on the transformer architecture given the copyright position that we have in this country”.

I wrote an article where I talk about this a bit. Everyone casually ascribes emotion to inanimate objects and not just computers, which is why we understand sentences like 'The coffee machine doesn't want to work' without believing them to be literally true www.sublationmag.com/post/in-defe...

In Defence of Empathy
Both the MAGA-techbro and identity-political views of empathy share the idea that it can be (or is) in some way fenced off. Both share the view that humans are in some way isolated within siloes, with...

London's homicide rate hit its lowest level since records began. Yet 40% of the public thought that murders had risen since 2019. That’s the danger of disinformation. We cannot accept it, and to defeat it, we’ve got to put pressure on the social media companies who profit from it.

This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.

I know everyone here knows this already, but if 'legitimate concerns' really were legitimate, they'd diminish as immigration falls. They don't and they won't, because they're not legitimate. They're just racist.

I love this movie, and I keep coming back to how it isn't at all about transness. It's about revenge against a fascist. But inherent in that is this throughline of "the fascist is wrong. The different ways to be are not just valid, but holy. Transness is divine. Community is sacred. Life matters."

The distracted driving discourse is already popping off but I’d just like to throw in: I’ve been an insurance adjuster for almost 13 years. When I started, we almost never saw high speed rear end impacts. Now they’re like the most common type of claim. It’s distractions, this is obvious.

Reform's boomer activists are in many ways the epitome of consumerist alienation. They are sad, lonely, embittered people who stay at home all day watching TV and whose children and grandchildren don't want to visit them anymore.

Not to compare them as people, but it's similar to the Corbyn phenomenon: a small hardcore who think he's their last best hope, while a large majority look at him and say 'Really? This guy?' Of course, Corbyn didn't have the press on his side, so the hate for Farage is more legit and organic

We once used the internet to connect with people to whom we couldn't otherwise speak. Increasingly it's used to *avoid* speaking to people we otherwise would speak to. That has got to be part of the reason for this

I know James Cleverly is the kind of Tory who appeals to Blueskiers but so far he's announced two policies: 1. No more culture war 2. except about cars, and this in a city which only voted for a Tory who went very big on bikes and buses. Does not seem coherent to me

In the main place Marx lived, the century following the publication of the Communist Manifesto saw capitalism develop in such a way that the proletariat became a numerical majority, developed class consciousness, formed itself into a political party, took power, and socialised much of the economy.

Climate damage would obliterate any economic benefits of new North Sea fields, analysis shows
Exclusive: Economic harm of CO2 pollution from Rosebank and Jackdaw forecast to far outweigh any boost to UK The climate damage caused by developing the Rosebank and Jackdaw oil and gas fields under consideration by the UK government would destroy their economic benefits many times over, according to an analysis. It estimates the economic damage caused by the carbon pollution from the oil and gas produced would be between £119bn and £336bn in the coming decades, compared with the £28.7bn in value to the UK estimated by Adura, the fossil fuel company promoting the new fields. We are told to ignore the racism of Hegel, Kant, Locke etc because they were just "men of their time". So what do we do with the racism of current academics? Are they too just "men of their time"? What is this "time" that seems to make racists of men?
