Goo morning, monsters. “Chorus” is too soft a word. The second the night sky bleeds to morning gray, the shrieks start to ricochet off the stained canyon wall. The laughing roars come next, then honks that swing up at the end, layering, sonically shoving until it’s too hot for the scream symphony.

I call River Otters (Lontra canadensis) "The Keepers of the Slide." They don't get stuck in muck; they reshape it into a doorway from land to water. They embody liminality, dissolving the bank's friction with a single move, to merge earth with the dark channel. Stay fluid. #SwampLifeSunday #Nature
Public domain photo from the National Parks Gallery: "A river otter pauses at the edge of a grassy bank, its face reflecting clearly in the still, dark water below. Tall stalks of green and yellow marsh grass surround the otter, framing its movement as it prepares to transition from land to water."

I just found this gem of a poem by R L Stevenson
'The roadside lined with ragweed, the sharp hills'
The roadside lined with ragweed, the sharp hills
Standing against the glow of eve, the patch Of rough white oats 'mongst darkling granite knolls,
The ferny coverts where the adders hatch,
The hollow that the northern sea upfills, The seagull wheeling by with strange, sad calls,
All these, this evening, weary me. Full fain Would I turn up the little elm tree way
And under the last elm tree, once again Stretch myself with my head among the grass;
So lying, tyne the memories of day
And let my loosed, insatiate being pass Into the blackbird's song of summer ease, Or, with the white moon, rise in spirit from the trees.

WANTING SUMPTUOUS HEAVENS
No one grumbles among the oyster clans, And lobsters play their bone guitars all summer.
Only we, with our opposable thumbs, want Heaven to be, and God to come, again.
There is no end to our grumbling; we want Comfortable earth and sumptuous Heaven.
But the heron standing on one leg in the bog Drinks his dark rum all day, and is content.

I went to read a different post in @adamcairnspoet.bsky.social's Substack this morning, after @victoriaspires.bsky.social said it made her want to revisit everything she's written. That post was indeed a thought-provoking read. But THIS one, sitting half a scroll below it, is what made me subscribe.
Screenshot of a Substack post by poet Adam Cairns, in which he argues that revision isn't about improving a poem but about discovering what it actually is.

Loaves and Fishes

This is not
the age of information.

This is *not*
the age of information.

Forget the news,
and the radio,
and the blurred screen.

This is the time
of loaves
and fishes.

People are hungry
and one good word is bread
for a thousand.

In the Dark
Robin Fulton Macpherson

God said: Let the dark be dark.
Let the stars shine properly.
And let darkness with no stars
heal the damage caused by light.

Men said: Let there be light all
night through, where there is no-one
much or no-one at all, let
the gathered haze from street-lamps,
undying brand-names, full-blaze
unpopulated windows
stain the undersides of clouds
even when nights are cloudless.

God said: Light itself needs rest.
Some things are best seen, unseen,
in darkness unhindered by
Great Light. Me, for example.

A #painting to look at. "Clare Road" came out of a day I mostly spent cycling high above the Shannon estuary after crossing it from north Kerry. A road populated by wildflowers and not much else, until these houses. I like walls. I like red corrugated roofs. So I painted them. #art #SpeirGhorm
Landscape format in painterly acrylics on canvas. View along a small road on the right, grey-blue and light purple, with grass down its middle. It bends past 2 derelict buildings on the left with the gables facing the viewer just past a roadside bank of overgrown tall grasses and weeds of greens and yellows and browns. Near gable has flat stones, of greys and browns, like slate making up its gable and from its roof is growing an orange-cream brush. The other building is inset further back and its stones are mostly covered by a cream textured plaster attached to which we see a sliver of a red roof, and chimney with a dark red-ish plant growing alongside it. Sky is very dark grey of purple and blue except for bright horizon of pale horizontal clouds. Roadside poles lean slightly and are covered in ivy. Signed bottom left in dark blue, Liam Daly

Good morning! For #PoemsAbout #InBloom Thank you as always to @alanparrywriter.co.uk and @thebrokenspine.co.uk I look forward to this every week. No Kings tomorrow, Saturday, March 28!
Poem:

Flowers
(In Memory of Renee Nicole Good)

One spot—as a seed—
blossoms into a sticky, crimson flower,

a giant poppy
unfurls across her shirt,

drops black pips
carried on wind and whistles—

(I hear—
ghost voices,
long time passing)

flowers know what to do,

(fleeting, eternal)

from sidewalk cracks
and suburban gardens,

they multiply--
with nectar and thorns,

they wake. Rise. Bloom.

Beckon to bees, birds,
continue.
