All flaps deployed as a Great Egret arrives at a small mud flat. I was watching this egret at his/her previous location for awhile, but nothing was caught. The egret must've decided a new fishing spot was needed.

Merlins are migrating through here in Michigan, and the Blue Jays are not happy about it. There were quite a few brave Blue Jays that would bop the Merlin and then fly away while being chased. At one point the Merlin flew right over my head.

An Eastern Chipmunk giving the "there's danger on the ground" alarm. There were several other chippies giving the same call. I couldn't see what was causing the alarm, but I bet there was a mink romping around.

This Red-tailed Hawk was preening when a Blue Jay landed nearby. The Blue Jay yelled at the hawk for a bit before also getting into some preening.

A Black-capped Chickadee perched along the nature trail after caching a sunflower seed. This time of year their brain volume increases to help them remember where they've cached their food.

The first Palm Warbler I've seen this Fall. These birds wag their tails, which can be quite helpful in identifying them.

I rarely see Tennessee Warblers in the Spring but happily see quite a few of them in the Fall. Most of them fly across the Gulf of Mexico to get to their wintering grounds. Safe travel little birdies!

The wee Ruby-crowned Kinglets passing through on their Fall migration. None of these birds are showing a red crown; it's often hidden, and only the males have them.

Lately the position of the sun has been making for long shadows along the boardwalk, even for the marsh birds like this Virginia Rail.

A Sandhill Crane calls at other Sandhill Cranes that are passing by overhead. I can tell this a male as they throw their head back 90 degrees while calling, while the females throw their heads back 45 degrees.

The Yellow-rumped Warblers have been feasting on Waterlily Planthoppers, which have been hanging out on cattail reeds.

An American Red Squirrel, also known as a Pine Squirrel, with a black walnut. The little fuzzy was scolding me from the tree branch. I believe the squirrel wanted to cross the nature trail to get to the food cache, so I didn't linger long.

A rainy day Great Egret. I believe this is the same bird that likes to hang out on the railing at times. Although having multiple birds that like to chill on the boardwalk would be pretty cool too.

A Red-tailed Hawk passing by. I believe this is the female of the local Red-tailed Hawk couple; the male has more white feathers on the noggin.

A Great Blue Heron standing on water lily roots in the rain. This bird had just had a huge fish for a meal; the fish looked like a Bowfin and was around 2 feet long. No photos of that action as the heron flew back into the bushes to eat (wanted to dine privately.)

A Sandhill Crane strolling along the nature trail with a tiny feather stuck on the red crown. This is the Lesser subspecies, the Greater subspecies would have the red crown extending further back.

I'm not sure if it was a fish or a frog that this Green Heron spotted, but it was something exciting enough to make the bird go into mohawk mode.

Out of all the hundreds of times I have checked tree cavities, I have found owls twice. This is the second time, and this one was hunkered down and giving me some serious side-eye.

A Gray Catbird shaking out the wings in the rain. There must have been a nest nearby as I've spotted juveniles and heard many of their signature mew calls from the berry bushes.

A Common Yellowthroat that was plucking tiny insects off the cattail reeds. I'm not sure what kind of insect, but there's one on the reed that's above his tail feathers. Maybe an ant?

A White-breasted Nuthatch with a couple of rain drops on the noggin. You can see the narial feathers that cover the nostrils, protecting the bird from breathing in from dust and debris.

"Elegant" might not be a word that immediately comes to mind when talking about gulls, but it fits the Bonaparte's Gull. I have seen them in non-breeding plumage before, but this bird was the first one I've seen in breeding plumage with the dark hood, bold white eyeliner, and bright red legs.

I saw my first Fall flock of Yellow-rumped Warblers this weekend. They signal the end of Fall warbler migration as they are some of the last warblers to head south. A few of them overwinter here in Michigan, surviving through the cold months by eating berries.

I haven't seen any Soras since May, and while checking for them in the marsh I often see another secretive marsh bird, the Virginia Rail. I was watching a Virginia Rail this morning when a Sora suddenly appeared and chased off the Rail.

A couple of shorebirds migrating through; Greater Yellowlegs poke about in a mudflat and the shallow waters. I believe these are younger birds as the adults migrate in late July. The smaller bird in one of the photos is a Solitary Sandpiper.
