I'm often asked what I believe. In this new interview, I spoke with Epochal Change about surviving the age of AI, democratizing art without compromise, and the radical empathy needed to truly find each other: www.epochalchange.org/ink-and-aria...

Please pause a moment to listen to this. Patricia Smith's reading of these words proves that the human voice will not easily be silenced, not even in this world.

I often think of Wendell Berry's great poem "The Peace of Wild Things," and I have a fruitful little quarrel with it: while his poem moves away from humanity for respite, I feel drawn toward us, despite everything, because of everything. I offer this little meditation to you.

The greatest revolution will come when we demand that the "value" of a human life is not in what it produces but in the sacred, messy mystery of its process of becoming what it is.

One night, after trying to write about this troubled world, after crossing out pages and pages of what I'd written, I fell asleep, dreamt of being visited by the great poet Rumi, and woke with this poem.

Little Hymn

In the deep
woods, in high summer,
we found the doe
doing her one great thing—
it took
as long as life takes
(new moon, day-
break, morning),
and the fawn stood
and sneezed among the sunlight.

Why are we giving the mystery
to machines?

I was going through old boxes, and I found this unpublished poem of mine I'd written in the back of a textbook, probably in my twenties, when I was in and out of mental health facilities. I've typed it up, in the hope that it might help someone out there.

I'm posting this today, on July 4, because some people in this world do not have the luxury of knowing the explosions they're hearing are just fireworks—and because we have work to do until everyone is free.

When men
broke open
the miraculous power
of the atom,

the first thing they did
with it
was deliver it

of the schoolchildren

I truly hope this finds its way to all who might need to hear it.
The Passion

What have you done three times
with your life?
Let it crumble?
Tried to lift it?
Stayed?

Listen: there will be time
for the wonder of wonders,
for the miraculous kingdom
that Spring is,
but today
there is nothing but the trouble—

(this hungering, this scent
of bread, this rage)—

and a man on his knees among his captors
with a crown of thorns
on his temples
and a cross of cedar on his shoulder
and his eyes that find
your eyes now
in the wild crowd
and ask you, in their language
of silences,
What would happen, what
would finally happen
if you opened, if you broke
so wholly open
that you gave your ruin the last chance
to undo you.
Today is when you stop wasting your pain.

You have only two tasks on this hard earth: to love (to love with all of you) and not to get to the end, with all its wreckage, and find out that the voice in you that you silenced was the beautiful truth all along.
