Labour just don't get it. They don't get how scared people are with extreme weather becoming our new normal. We need voices in parliament that will force them to take wildfires seriously, not quietly shirk responsibility.

Went for chips by the river; no chips. Oh well. The river is always there, however, so we kissed the sun down, I crocheted a bit with the last of the light, and owls sang to us while the sky changed colour. (I do love a simplified landscape; all I did with this pic was crop it hard.)
Sunset image, simple layers of landscape: pale peach sky, wispy grey strips of clouds, a distant cloudband with an upper edge tgst looks like hills and hedges, and in the foreground, black against the grey and peach, a tump of trees on a dark hill.

Alright, time to post the receipts of this gown I've been ranting about. This is my Brunswick, 100% handsewn in silk. I love her and I love sewing, and generative AI could NEVER. Make art, friends. It doesn't have to be good, it just has to be you, with your hands. Just make it.
A woman stands in a field at sunset with small mountains in the distance. Her back is to the camera. She wears a blue and white silk gingham gown. It is an 18th century gown called a Brunswick. It consists of a petticoat (skirt) that brushes the tops of her feet, and an overgown with skirts that fall to her hip, a loose, pleated back, long sleeves, and a hood. A high white collar is visible above the hood, and a white linen cap with a dark blue ribbon around it covers her hair.

First properly cool morning, good. I'm dressing like a hobbit, obsessed with apple-cake & -pudding recipes, & yesterday I made mushroom-stuffed potato cakes. September was so warm it was like living through the slightly dusty unsold bits of Summer in the sale bins, reduced but not really appealing.

From the introduction to the Hookland Tourist Board I=SEE STRANGE HOOKLAND book:
REMEMBER:

Don’t go out by yourself at night. Many things in this book are thought to be imaginary, but being out by yourself in the dark can still be dangerous – even if you don’t encounter the Danebury Grim.

If you see something that scares you, tell a parent or a trusted adult such as a teacher. In extreme cases where you can’t find an adult you can trust, you could even tell a police officer.

Don’t provoke Faeries of any type. You would not like people shouting your name, poking you in your bed with a stick or throwing stones in your bath, so don’t do it to Faeries. No-one likes ill-behaved children, least of all the Elves of Hookland.

Don’t signal for UFOs with torches. It is not only a waste of batteries, it can be misinterpreted by the emergency services. Besides, we can’t promise that all UFOs are friendly or interpret your signal as a positive message.

Show some respect for the graves of the dead. If you were buried in the ground you wouldn’t appreciate another child dancing on your grave or trying to dig it up would you?

Remember to take extra care when looking for things around water – both by the sea and along rivers and pools. Even if he is imaginary, the King-Under-the-Sea should be shown some deference and Stay Belows not encouraged to grab at you when dangling your legs or trailing your hands in cool, apparently calm water.

Imaginary things can’t hurt you unless you believe in them with all your heart and then they are really quite dangerous.

A constant recommendation.
J is for …
Jansson
One of my favourite imagined places to inhabit as unhappy
child was Moominvalley. I am still an unofficial ambassador
for it, telling young writers I mentor that they will struggle
to find a better constructed fictional world. I push those
writers into reading Tove Jansson because she makes
words dance, because she makes locations shimmer with
a sense of nature holding within it the not-quite-real that
may manifest at any moment. I push because she is one
of the finest storytellers, because her imagination still
pushes me. I hope that is all in Hookland, as no book ever
taught me more about the power of dark absence in a text
than Moominvalley In November. While the Moomins may
sometimes overshadow Jansson’s stunning lines as illus
trator, the sheer fairytale menace of her early paintings,
they cannot obscure her power to create spaces where the
mind may walk in hope of wonder

Not 3 months after moving to Gloucester, the next big life-change is in hand. Next stop, Scotland! Lots of practical challenges need sorting. All will be achieved bit by bit. BUT the apple I cut open at the start of September contained germinated seeds, which we planted; behold, 2 tiny trees!
Two tiny apple seedlings in soil in a grey plastic pot. Their first true leaves have just opened; they are around 2cm tall.
