Driving back home from dropping off venison for processing, I saw a Belted Kingfisher and a Great Blue Heron in one of my favorite roadside wetland areas. 🥰 I would have stopped to take photos but it's not the safest spot due to traffic if you're not prepared ahead of time.

October is change. October is spirits. We walk the edge of its fields, knowing they wait for the first frost of the year to crack them and release their ghosts. - Katherine Gidding, Hookland artist, talking about her 1939 painting 'The Lip'

It’s wild how messages line up when you’re meant to get them. For me, it’s hawks screaming close overhead back to back, followed by strangers out in public saying the exact words tied to what I’m chewing on. "Reality" really just turns the volume all the way up. #FolkWitchFriday #WitchSky #FolkWitch

Bloody kids of today. They aren't satisfied with manglewurzels or turnips for their Haggedy-Raggedy lanterns. Oh no, they want something non-traditional, something a bit different. Something a bit too bloody orange if you ask me. The spirits won't like it. – Sam Buckle, 1982 #VOH

Poe knew the border of death was shadowy at best. Across Southern pine barrens & red clay crossroads, the unquiet dead linger as "restless walkers" - flesh & bone finishing old chores until forced to cross running water. Some never truly sleep. #WyrdWednesday #SouthernFolklore #WitchSky
Option 1: Direct & Atmospheric

A composite southern gothic image of a rural red dirt crossroads bordered by dense green pine woods. Standing in the center of the dusty lane is a pale, ghostly woman in a long flowing vintage gown with dark hair.

Close their eyes with silver coins, or they’ll come back walking. Coastal Southern tradition warns that an unkept wake draws the restless dead back down the dirt lane - not as mist, but as muddy feet returning to the hearth they left behind. #WyrdWednesday #WitchSky #SouthernFolklore #Folklore

My two favorite proverbs - One is Yoruban: "Bit by bit we eat the head of the rat." The second comes from a spiritual teacher who now is a mighty ancestor: "Find your amusement. And when you cannot? Be amused you cannot." Today I am going bit by bit while finding my amusement. 💚

Ghostly white against the dark bellies of cypress trunks, the Great Egret stands motionless at the water's edge. Old swamp lore viewed the white crane as a watchful sentinel stationed at the crossing between solid earth and bottomless mire. Pure patience in feather and bone. #SwampLifeSunday

Like ancient bog bodies, swamp timber defies time. Submerged in cold, acidic peat water, heart cypress doesn't rot - tannins "pickle" the wood, turning fallen trunks into indestructible ghost logs that outlast generations. The mire keeps its relics intact, held safe from decay. #SwampLifeSunday

Otherworldly allies often step through dreams, carrying unmistakable signatures across the veil. Waking, I look to the sky: a hawk’s sudden cry, dusk owls, or a bluebird breaking pattern. When an animal insists on entering the conscious mind, I listen. #FolkWitchFriday #Animism #WitchSky

Not to piss on anyone’s chips, but Hookland won’t be doing any ‘31 days of spookiness’ malarkey. Halloween is not that big a thing in a county that does hauntings in a matchbox every day of the year. The gothic is not tinsel on this ghost soil, it’s a bone tattoo.

From the introduction to the Hookland Tourist Board I=SEE STRANGE HOOKLAND book:
REMEMBER:

Don’t go out by yourself at night. Many things in this book are thought to be imaginary, but being out by yourself in the dark can still be dangerous – even if you don’t encounter the Danebury Grim.

If you see something that scares you, tell a parent or a trusted adult such as a teacher. In extreme cases where you can’t find an adult you can trust, you could even tell a police officer.

Don’t provoke Faeries of any type. You would not like people shouting your name, poking you in your bed with a stick or throwing stones in your bath, so don’t do it to Faeries. No-one likes ill-behaved children, least of all the Elves of Hookland.

Don’t signal for UFOs with torches. It is not only a waste of batteries, it can be misinterpreted by the emergency services. Besides, we can’t promise that all UFOs are friendly or interpret your signal as a positive message.

Show some respect for the graves of the dead. If you were buried in the ground you wouldn’t appreciate another child dancing on your grave or trying to dig it up would you?

Remember to take extra care when looking for things around water – both by the sea and along rivers and pools. Even if he is imaginary, the King-Under-the-Sea should be shown some deference and Stay Belows not encouraged to grab at you when dangling your legs or trailing your hands in cool, apparently calm water.

Imaginary things can’t hurt you unless you believe in them with all your heart and then they are really quite dangerous.
