I feel bad for the motorists who had to wait while we rode along Danforth for Critical Mass tonight, but they could have just taken side streets.
A panorama of a fuckton of people on bikes leaving to ride Danforth out to Bad Badford’s office. Looking back on Danforth at a fuckton of cyclists chatting, ringing their bells, doing cyclist things. Cyclists almost as far as the eye can see. Not pictured: about the same fuckton in front of me. The picture is skewed because I was just king of holding my phone up and hoping.

The famous New York Daily News headline FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD. Alright I guess I need to be the guy that gives context in alt text. The original headline was about how Gerald Ford refused to bail out New York City when it was bankrupt in the 70s. I'm reappropriating it because Doug Ford (Ontario Premier) just won a case that gives him rights to trample over the urban planning decisions of cities (like Toronto)

ICYMI: CBC News @alichiasson.bsky.social did a wonderful job covering Wednesday's pedestrian memorial installation. The designs that would likely have saved Marr Horsey's life - a raised crosswalk, curb extensions and speed calming - are inexpensive. Yet after 13 years, no plans to install them.

Here's some of that speed data. Cameras may be gone, but speed data is still being collected. There's been a 6X ⬆️ in the number of drivers feeling safe traveling at deadly speeds between houses & a park. Larger signs won't stop this, unless those signs have enforceable consequences & fines on them.

1 in 4 drivers on Parkside are now exceeding 50 km/h. The speed limit is 40 km/h. Reminder: 80% of pedestrians will not survive a crash at 50 km/h.
Percentage of vehicles going 50+ km/h on Parkside, monthly from December 2023 to April 2026. The percentage is between 5 and 10% until the camera ban, at which point it climbs to over 25%

One more time for those in the back: Doug Ford's goal was to encourage drivers to speed without risk of punishment even though it would increase injury and death particularly in school zones and banning speed cameras achieved that very specific goal. Goal set. Goal achieved!

That's our guess too. So that way, the sign can be slammed onto a kid walking to school and kill them instead. 😭 Several pedestrians have already been killed that way by drivers slamming into light poles and knocking them over onto an innocent person who just happened to be walking nearby.

What we need is complete streets designed for safety instead of speed, especially on high-speed arterial roads like Birchmount, and automated enforcement.

We all deserve better. Any driver who can't control themselves and refrain from speeding in a school zone and potentially killing a child should pay a fine at bare minimum. Also, 50km/h in a school zone is ludicrous. Almost no children and very few adults would survive being struck at that speed.

If our leaders had ANY IDEA how much pain is inflicted when a driver kills a loved one, or cared, they would do everything in their power to prevent the carnage and devastation, instead of destroying the effective preventative measures already in place.

We checked out the first giganto-signs courtesy of Doug Ford. This is the dumbest crap and a total waste of taxpayer money. The gov't knows speed cameras are effective. Instead of evidence-based best practices that save KIDS' LIVES, these populist idealogues deny reality and leave us with this.
A photo of the new oversized sign with a hand in the left foreground making a thumbs down gesture, and a bottom caption that says "this sign should be a speed camera"Another sign, identical and located down the road from the first one, with a top caption that says "all this is a sign of is abject leadership failure" and a bottom caption that says "This does NOTHING to keep kids safe"Another shot of an oversized sign, with a top caption that says "there is *only* research showing signs are ineffective" and a bottom caption that says "*all* research about speed cameras proves they are effective and save lives"A shot of the base of the pole holding up the oversized signs. Special poles had to be ordered. There are 2 large holes drilled through the base of the extra-big pole. This is baffling.
