Piggott’s Castle is one of Portland’s oldest remaining examples of castle-style architecture. Its tower, crenellated roofline that mimics medieval battlements and thick brick walls make it a “castle” by aesthetic definition, not by practicality.

This Portland castle ‘is an incredible piece of the past’ that’s faded from view and memory
Piggott’s Castle, one of Portland’s only surviving castle-style homes, was a conspicuous landmark when it was built in the Southwest Hills in 1892. Its current owners hope to revive its legacy.

I never met Professor Chris Wickham but he was a towering figure in the study of early medieval Europe, a compelling thinker, unafraid of big ideas, and everything I've heard about him from Good People like Guy Halsall tells me he was one of them. 2026 has inflicted some hard losses.

Picking up on @susanwabuda.bsky.social‘s comment below, the problem w/ calling this “medieval” is the implication that only the deep dark past was cruel. Surely the events of the last 125 yrs demonstrate that mediatized cruelty is thoroughly modern & American/Western. We need to own it: This is Us.

Drawings of various creatures on a pale yellow watercolour stained/textured background. On the right a seated woman holding a mirror in which a unicorn paying her homage is reflected. Another unicorn enters the frame on the far right. Jousting knights fight in the top right hand corner. A griffin sits by the woman and a hybrid of man and tailed beast blows upon a musical instrument bottom left.

I mean using the term Medieval is a bit silly, as it's being livestreamed and really one of the most famous executions, that of Charles 1st was well after the medieval period. I'm tired of the term being used in way that's not remotely close to medieval, the whole thing is just nasty and evil.
