Henri Rousseau : Mandrill in the Jungle, 1909 Oil on canvas Contrary to his typically massive canvas works, this is remarkably small: 19 × 24 cm | 7.5 x 9.5 in Private Collection Further info in the alt text 👇
The artwork features a close-up portrait of a mandrill peeking through heavily layered, vibrant jungle flora. The mandrill's face acts as the central focal point, with its highly detailed, distinct red and blue snout providing a sharp contrast against a rich, enveloping background of overlapping green leaves and brown tones.

Like all of his celebrated jungle scenes, Rousseau painted this masterpiece without ever leaving France or seeing an actual jungle. Instead, he relied completely on his imagination, trips to the botanical glasshouses at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, sketches of taxidermied museum animals, and illustrated books.

This self-taught approach allowed him to defy traditional atmospheric perspective, choosing instead to layer flat planes of color that give the piece a dreamlike and mysterious quality.

This picture dates to the early 1880s, shortly after Albert de Belleroche had enrolled at the atelier of Carolus Duran. Here Belleroche met John Singer Sargent. A life-long friendship ensued, with both the artists sharing studios in Paris and London. With thanks to Paul Liss.

She had an inside and an outside now, and suddenly she knew how not to mix them, 2018 Amy Sherald Oil on canvas #ArtSky
• The Subject: A stoic Black woman dressed as a suburban matriarch, wearing a vibrant blue shirt, patterned trousers, and a thick pearl or stone choker necklace.

• The Title: The phrase is taken from Zora Neale Hurston’s 1937 novel Their Eyes Were Watching God.

• The Meaning: The artwork explores the tension and boundary between a person's private, intimate inner emotional life and the public persona they project to handle societal expectations and external preconceptions.

• The Style: Sherald uses grayscale for the figure's skin to strip away racial categorization and draw focus to the subject's interiority and universal humanity.

Saint Woman, 2015 Amy Sherald Oil on canvas #ArtSky
• Visual Style: Features Sherald’s signature grisaille technique (rendering the subject's skin in grayscale) to challenge traditional perceptions of race and identity, paired with a vibrant background.

• Composition: Depicts a life-size or slightly larger-than-life Black female figure facing forward with her head turned in profile, evoking an archetype of a saint set against a bright, halo-like yellow backdrop.

A picture of a work in progress recycled art piece made up of small offcuts of 300 GSM watercolour paper cut down into 4 x 1 cm strips that are organised into three columns, of seven rows held together with masking tape on the back. I then painted loose floral motifs overlapping each other in hues of pink, purple, silver and metallic pink/silver and silver/gold. Once dry I will break up the picture and use them to create new pieces of disjointed abstract artwork.

Materials Used

Kissho Gansai Japanese Watercolour in Sakura Iro (207) - Cherry Blossom Pink, Bara (225) - Deep Rose Pink, and Aka Murasaki (31) - Purple.

MAB Watercolours handmade metallic glitter shimmer watercolour in 'Vivienne' - A Sliver / Pink fine mica metallic colour shift watercolour and 'Bella' - A Silver / Gold fine mica metallic colour shift watercolour from the Princess series palette. 'Dazzle' - An Ultra Reflective medium coarse mica metallic silver watercolour from the Mirror series palette.
