This is also how I view the whole AI “entertainment catered to you” experience. I don’t come to art for things I already know and what I already want. And sometimes the new stuff isn’t stuff I like. That’s what taking in art is.

"By using AI, tasks like essays that used to take hours can be completed in minutes!" Sure, like how if I arrive at the gym and immediately go for a shower, my workout is done in record time. And if I throw my sandwiches straight in the bin, I can finish my lunch in under 10 seconds.

you may have noticed that animation has never been more in-demand & in the zeitgeist and yet, seemingly, never have media conglomerates been less willing to produce it. you may also notice these guys get multimillion dollar severance packages after they gut a studio. there is probably no connection

The reason people love the Ea-nāṣir story is less the vitriol and more the fact that we couldn’t be more culturally different from a 4000 years dead Sumerian but we can totally relate. It shows us that no matter our superficial differences people are just people.

"De-Trumpification" has to be one of the top agenda items if Dems win power. All the lawlessness and every last one of his efforts to turn DC into an imperial capital should be undone.

Part of why I don't like the AI-or-bust economy is the constant flopsweat of people on the news who say this HAS to work. Quit making everyone so anxious. Goddamn. If this is the next Google then why are you acting like this? I don't remember being told to buy an iPhone at gunpoint.

I guess what’s nice about liking really old entertainment vs new is that you don’t see your favorites sour in real time. Except for extreme cases, knowing more about them late or post-career is optional.

Israel's horrific, in your face conduct, combined with the suppression of antizionist criticism by pro-Israel political and social elites, has created a kind of cognitive permission structure to deny that Jews face any oppression whatsoever.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

You mean the thing that does Cliffs Notes of things it has read is not thinking at all and is just showing you Cliffs Notes of things it read? Crazy. People with functioning brains have told you over and over that LLMs don't think for themselves, but we are running out of functioning brains

Is Madame Web a good movie?

No.

Should I see it?

You should see it immediately. Madame Web belongs in the Criterion Collection with a lengthy, labored essay justifying its inclusion. I would write it for free.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a guy is putting on his jacket, getting ready to leave his apartment. He says, “gonna go get some ice cream.” Panel 2: the guy peeks around a corner into another room in his apartment. In the room, there is a monkey with glowing eyes floating in a large, shimmering, blue tube and some unusual technology lining the walls. The guy asks, “you want anything, omniscient monkey in hypersleep?” Panel 3: answering his own question, the guy scoffs, “psh! Duh… banana flavor.”

The fact that only ONE animated show is on this list further proves the stigma towards animation is still alive and kicking, which is a damn shame. No Primal, no Arcane, no Scavengers Reign, no Blue Eyed Samurai, no Avatar The Last Airbender. Like C’MON PEOPLE.

DVDs aren't low-tech. They're just things you can actually own, that won't disappear overnight, that don't require a monthly subscription, that won't suddenly get reedited, that won't start putting adverts in the middle and that won't sell your data to the worst people in the world.

I don’t care whether there are valid use cases for LLMs. I know for certain that any such use cases are not in education or humanities academia, both of which LLMs undermine in fundamental ways. Techies need to learn the humility to accept that they don’t know how to “optimize” everyone else’s jobs.
