🗳️ Today is the UN's International Day of Democracy. If you asked people what they associate with democracy, many would probably respond: elections. Voting is a fundamental democratic right. But being able to cast a ballot every few years is not enough. 🧵👇

🚨 The electoral reform amendment won't be heard today - it was ruled out of scope. This is disappointing. But if the government thinks this is the last they'll hear from us, they're badly wrong. A fair voting system is not a "nice to have." It must be a priority.

The Prime Minister is a longstanding supporter of electoral reform. Now a new poll has found that a majority of MPs back a review of the voting system, too. First Past the Post is no longer fit for purpose. Andy Burnham should kickstart the process for replacing it in his first 100 days.

This image of a football match in Gaza was removed from a sports photography festival in France following Israeli pressure.
Image of a football match organized on a redeveloped field, surrounded by buildings reduced to ashes as part of a genocide perpetrated by the Israeli army. It is an apocalyptic scene that presents the striking contrast of a clean, green football pitch amidst a crumbling, burnt out urban environment that was a troubled yet living city just a few years ago. The photo was finally removed from the port esplanade, where it was to be exhibited, reports the local media the Pays d'Auge.

Sometimes we get asked: is electoral reform really a priority right now? Yes - because how we elect our MPs impacts everything: the governments we get, the laws they pass, the direction the country takes. We can’t solve the problems we face without a healthy democracy.

RefUK, RW media, & Eurofash are plainly trying to whip up a panic about this. Any serious report must begin by explaining that Ceuta is in Africa - not mainland Spain - and 48k+ of the 50k crossers were already returned. It is frightening how many still don't know this. Please share on all socials.

Today I took part in the 10th and final #RunForJo In 2016, Jo Cox was tragically killed while doing the job she loved. Ten years on, it feels more important than ever that we come together to remember Jo, her values, and her enduring message: “There is more in common than that which divides us.”
A group of parliamentary colleagues, including Simon Lightwood MP, pose together after completing the final Run for Jo event. The group stands smiling inside a large purple photo frame displaying the message “We’ve got More In Common,” referencing Jo Cox’s famous words. Several participants wear running kit, race medals, and bib numbers, while others are dressed casually. The photo is taken outdoors on a sunny day, with green grass, trees, and blue skies in the background, celebrating community, friendship, and Jo Cox’s legacy of unity and bringing people together.
