OK, non-finance people: crash course in bonds. Bond prices and yields moving opposite directions. Yields on US govt bonds [“treasuries”] are surging (ie the prices are falling). Prices are falling because people are selling treasuries at a massive clip.

Normally, in a crisis, US gov’t bond yields fall because they are (were) considered the safest investment possible. Now, yield are suddenly rising. This indicates a couple things, but most critically: Risk premium for US debt surging. Investors view US debt as much more risky than the did a week ago

The other problem here is that treasuries are used as collateral across billions of transactions globally (both financial and real economy) because they are “as good as cash”. If the value of that collateral declines, you have to put up more of it - and suddenly, treasuries are shitting.
