Here is the thing, right, here is the thing (this is me getting a run up): the concept of the modern nation state and citizenship thereof is a relatively recent cultural phenomenon and we actually don't have great terms to conceptualise it as distinct from what we used to mean by "nationality".

Palantir shifting from hiring only "Ivy or Ivy-equivalent" degrees to hiring only out of high school is an admission that "training" and "talent" were never factors at all. They were looking for packaging & prestige, and now they're looking for ignorance & impressionability.
Tech companies launching their own programs to train grads because they ‘can’t rely’ on Ivy Leagues
By Lydia Moynihan
Published Oct. 1, 2026, 6:00 a.m. ETAs the university system increasingly becomes a wildly expensive bastion of anti-Western sentiment, key figures in Silicon Valley are betting on alternatives to higher education. They argue that even the Ivy League is no longer producing the best candidates — nor are they even accepting some of the most qualified students.

“It used to be the case that you could rely on somebody who went to an Ivy or Ivy-equivalent to be top notch,” said Jordan Hirsch, who runs Palantir’s semester-long intensive Meritocracy Fellowship, which accepts high school graduates.“But that’s not the case anymore… we suspected that there was a lot of talent being missed.”

my stance on fantasy vs sci-fi is that i think these are aesthetic labels that have gotten so broad that they're barely informative at all. the real slop genre is orc fiction. if there's an archetypal "orc species," a nuance-free inherently evil group of morally uncomplicated enemies, it's slop.

Pew tested AI synthetic surveys against actual survey data. Conclusion: “This experiment taught us that, at this time, AI models are not an adequate replacement for traditional polling on topics of broad public importance.” This is an all time bad idea. No need to hedge with “at this time.”

The Phantom of Heilbronn, also referred to as the Woman Without a Face, was a presumed female serial killer whose existence was inferred from DNA evidence found at 40 crime scenes across Austria, France and Germany from 1993 to 2009.

In March 2009, investigators concluded that the supposed serial killer did not exist, and the DNA belonged to a woman who worked at a factory that made the cotton swabs used for collecting DNA samples

There's a credible proposal for the design of a national commission on electoral reform already waiting on the shelf...
What would a national commission look like that met these design requirements? In fact, a cross-party group of MPs - the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Fair Elections - published a very credible proposal last year. This involved a tripartite structure: an independent commission of seven members who would steer the overall process; an expert panel who would provide "politically impartial advice and evidence"; and a voters' forum -a citizens' assembly of around 100 members, who would hear the options, deliberate in depth, and make recommendations.
