This 🧵 will have readings that I assign in my Sociology of AI class.
A flyer for the class Sociology of AI

The overview says: SOC 3900 Sociology of AI uses a sociological lens to study what is popularly called "artificial intelligence." In this class students will learn about cutting edge research examining the origins, impacts, and struggles over the broad set of technologies and practices involving AI. Through an international focus, this class will cover numerous topics related to AI, including: gig work, algorithmic bias, data colonialism, resource extraction, digital labor, data center studies, and environmental and climate effects. This class will primarily focus on sociological research, but will also include scholarship from geography, history, international studies, and environmental studies, as well as other social scientific and humanistic disciplines. No prior knowledge of AI is required for this class

This is a great read, and it's also a lesson. This is what everyone could be doing, at every level. This is the possibility open to every one of us, while every single cry of "we had no choice" was and is a cowardly lie.

I agree with all the takes about an attack on the humanities being an attack on critical thinking, &c. It’s also about joy, though. ‘Why bother studying that’ is always also a sneer at — why do you think you should get to do something you enjoy? Grow up and be miserable all the time!

I wanted to visualize what it looked like when the 988 hotline’s LGBTQ+ youth services shut down. This is what it looks like: almost 70,000 people reaching out for help, then nothing. As of today, it’s been a year since "Option 3" went away.

From September 2022 to July 2025, LGBTQ+ youth and young adults had specialized help when they reached the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Then that help went away.

Instagram post from Jessie Diggins, showing her carrying the American flag and smiling:

I want to make sure you know who I'm racing for when I get to the start line at the Olympics. I'm racing for an American people who stand for love, for acceptance, for compassion, honesty and respect for others. I do not stand for hate or violence or discrimination.
I get to decide who I'm racing for every single day, and how I want to live up to my values. For everyone out there caring for others, protecting their neighbors and meeting people with love - every single step is for you.
YOU are the ones who make me proud to carry the flag, and I hope I can bring you joy over these next few weeks.

The demand is still: abolish ICE. Don’t let them trick you into thinking they aren’t leaving MN to go traumatize other communities. Justice for Renee, Alex, and the dozens of others who died in ICE detention in the last 12 months alone demands us not to concede to MN withdrawal. ABOLISH. ICE.

Even when they show signs of weakness or forced regret, we must not give an inch. Authoritarian governments still respond to public opinion, which is why sustained pressure matters. We have to keep making clear that these thuggish actions are unconscionable and will not be tolerated. Don’t let up.

"If I gave you a bowl of skittles and three of them were poison would you still eat them?"
"Are the other skittles human lives?"
"What?"
"Like. Is there a good chance. A really good chance. I would be saving someone from a war zone and probably their life if I ate a skittle?"
"Well sure. But the point-"
"I would eat the skittles."
"Ok-well the point is-""I would GORGE myself on skittles. I would eat every single fucking skittle I could find. I would STUFF myself with skittles. And when I found the poison skittle and died I would make sure to leave behind a legacy of children and of friends who also ate skittle after skittle until there were no skittles to be eaten. And each person who found the poison skittle we would weep for. We would weep for their loss, for their sacrifice, and for the fact that they did not let themselves succumb to fear but made the world a better place by eating skittles.
Because your REAL question...the one you hid behind a shitty little inaccurate, insensitive, dehumanizing racist little candy metaphor is, IS MY LIFE MORE IMPORTANT THAN THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS OF MEN, WOMEN, AND TERRIFIED CHILDREN...
... and what kind of monster would think the answer to that question... is yes?"

The beauty of mass nonviolent resistance and mutual aid is that every kidnapping, every murder, every beating, every lie—the only weapons they have—invigorates our solidarity and commitment and weakens them. It turns their violence and propaganda inside out. We’re winning and it’s not even close.
