one must imagine batman happy, and when one brings numbers into it, one is like wow this guy is gonna get there FAST qwantz.com/index.php?co...
T-Rex: Batman, who was great at fighting crime, smiled. His one-man war on crime was going great!!

T-Rex: It HAD to be!
T-Rex: Because dressing up as a bat and punching criminals until they stop doing crime isn't the sort of thing you'd keep doing if it WASN'T having a solid, sustained, and measurable impact. It MUST have been going great for him to not just keep it up, but invest in a Batgyro, and Batmobile, and Batplane, and so on!Utahraptor: Yeah, it makes sense that Batman would be super effective! He's BATMAN.
T-Rex: Exactly!

T-Rex: So Batman's SO good at fighting crime that he HAS to win, right? He decides to fight crime - the very CONCEPT of crime, an impossible task - and he DOES it, because he's BATMAN. So Gotham ends up crime free and nobody's parents get murdered in any more alleyways, THE END.T-Rex: Therefore, LOGICALLY, all Batman's adventures MUST take place in the brief interval AFTER he starts fights crime but BEFORE he defeats it, which given his skills I estimate to be about 2 weeks, tops.
Off panel: But -
T-Rex: EITHER YOU ADMIT I'M RIGHT OR YOU'RE SAYING BATMAN SUCKS

Chris Arning recommends High Jump as Icarus Story by Gustav Parker Hibbett and says: I just thought - what an audacious conceit to pattern a whole volume on the concept of the high jump. There is a lot of daring work in it.

The depth of the shame of a country this wealthy and abundant allowing its people to go hungry is impossible to measure. The fact that a handful of people could fix this by paying their fair share of taxes while still remaining obscenely wealthy makes it even worse.

These very true words from Steve Hely have given me tremendous comfort over the years.
Writing a novel— actually picking the words and filling in paragraphs— is a tremendous pain in the ass. Now that TV’s so good and the Internet is an endless forest of distraction, it’s damn near impossible. That should be taken into account when ranking the all-time greats. Somebody like Charles Dickens, for example, who had nothing better to do except eat mutton and attend public hangings, should get very little credit.

I wrote this in January, about the issues we face when responsibility for covering the irony-poisoned and extremely-online trolls of the far right, falls to journalists who can't rotate a PDF. www.irishexaminer.com/lifestyle-co...
The same sturdy media apparatus that so assiduously pores through court documents — or uncovers spending gaps or analyses executive orders — is not well positioned to tackle a movement entirely predicated on bad faith gestures designed to shock and confuse — not least one whose roots are in labyrinthine internet subcultures that modern, professional journalists will have avoided their entire lives. And so, buffering at the sight of the world’s richest man delivering a fascist salute to the cameras of the world, they froze on the spot. Within hours, the sensible and serious moderates everywhere from the BBC to the New York Times caveated their coverage with quote marks or qualifiers; “what looked like”, “what some are calling”, “what many interpreted as”.It is a deliberate nudge and wink to the far-right ideas you actively hold, bathed in a self-defensive layer of irony from which you can always wriggle, on the grounds that it was just a hilarious joke. “I’m an edgelord, not a Nazi,” you continue to tell yourself even as your every viewpoint calcifies toward the politics of Genghis Khan.

This kidding/not kidding tactic forms the entire story of the last two decades of angry nerds on the internet. We have seen it play out everywhere sad men congregate to complain about their unhappy lives and get told that someone else — someone foreign, different, or weird — is to blame. None of it is mysterious. None of it is innocent. None of it is new.

Verification means we can establish what is true in ways we can trust, through journalism, science, courts, audits, transparency. Deliberation means we can reason together across differences, in parliaments, the press, social movements. Accountability means power can be held to account.

To expand on some of the points I make in this, we often talk about democracy as if it lives or dies on elections. But elections are just one part of the picture. At its core, a healthy democracy depends on three functions working together: Verification, Deliberation, and Accountability, aka VDA.

IMPOSSIBLE: URGENT

If you plant a garden on a floodplain, you can't ask
the river to wait until after harvest.

If you open an umbrella, you can't beg
the barometer to control the density of clouds.

If you shout ludicrous confessions, you can't unvibrate
vocal folds into a whisper.

If you clip flowers from a bleeding-heart, you can't line
your tongue with insincerity.

If you offer a garden, you can't curl up
in a blizzard and become a snowbank.

If you collect sparrow feathers from a cat's mouth, the carcass has already been swallowed.

If you're trying not to fall in love,

How many ways will you make me
