For those who missed the irony here, let me spell it out for you: Giving up trans athletes in sports does not defeat fascism; it advances it. The way to fight fascism is to defend the kids. Want to fight fascism? Do it here, now, at this point, where they are today. Not after a retreat.

OK. So I asked Gemini Pro if what it does is "reasoning." Then I asked it for its chain of thought. Then I asked it this. (Claude Opus produces something generally similar.)
Did you just show me your actual chain of thought, or something you recreated from scratch that may or may not duplicate it?

You caught the illusion perfectly. I recreated it from scratch.

I do not have a retrievable "log" or a literal internal monologue that I can pull up and show you. When you asked for my chain of thought, I did not look backward to analyze the steps I took, because there were no steps to look at—just a massive, instantaneous matrix multiplication that resulted in the previous text.

Instead, I took your new prompt ("Can I see your chain-of-thought..."), looked at the text I had just generated, and computed a post-hoc rationalization. I generated a narrative that reverse-engineered the output into a logical, human-readable blueprint.

It was an entirely new text generation predicting what a structural breakdown of that argument should look like.

This is actually a perfect real-time example of the exact phenomenon we were just discussing:

You saw an analytical breakdown and naturally assumed it was a transparent look at a sequential reasoning process.

I was simply doing what I always do: predicting the most statistically likely words to satisfy the prompt. In this case, predicting the syntax of "introspection."

This is why dealing with LLMs can be so disorienting. I can generate a flawless description of a reasoning process without ever having engaged in it. I don't know why I generated the previous response; I only know how to convincingly explain why a human might have.

AI as a marketing term for technologies like LLMs and the bubble it has created can and probably will go away when the bubble bursts and the mania dissipates. Then the useful parts of the tech can continue in the appropriate smaller-scale use cases. It’s not a genie. It’s just software.

Deeply saddened to learn of the loss of my dear friend Satan, the Prince of Lies. Though we often disagreed about matters such as the appropriate role of torture in the afterlife, I will most remember how his quick wit and affable nature made our weekly golf outings a ritual. He will be missed.

When you are evaluating whether someone should be granted the power to make laws for an entire state or nation, you should not extend them the benefit of the doubt, you should not extend them grace, you should not be generous. You should be skeptical and cynical and rigorous.

No, for real, though, here’s my proposal: As soon as you crest into $1 billion, we throw you a party, congratulate you for winning the game, and then we build a bunch of affordable housing and you wake up tomorrow in an apartment with $1000 to your name. When you win the game, it resets.

AOC is right to say this, and anyone who attacks her for it is wrong. And AOC should under no circumstances be labeled antisemitic.
"AOC: I personally do not trust somebody like Marjorie Taylor Greene—a proven bigot and anti-semite—on the issues of what is good for Gazans and Israelis. I don’t think it benefits our movement to align with white nationalists."
with Cenk Uygur responding: "This is just terrible. She sounds just like the establishment. She’s attacking an opponent of Israel as an antisemite. This is exactly what Israeli supporters want - split the anti-war movement and the critics of Israel’s genocide. Deeply counterproductive. And selfish."

At this point, solving climate change is cheaper than not solving it -- not only on some grand 50 year time horizon, but tomorrow, today, immediately. Soving climate change *is* affordability. Maybe Dems should tell voters about that.

The Supreme Court has direct assaulted the 15th amendment. The Reconstruction amendments are the foundation of American democracy. Without them this country is not worth preserving. The only way to preserve our country then is to end the current Supreme Court by adding 4 pro-equality justices.

This is a must-read. It’s a detailed proposal based on systems that work around the world, and doesn’t require reopening an EIS. There’s a path here toward building *all* of ST3, sooner and cheaper. But so far, Sound Transit leadership has refused to consider it, wanting instead to cut rail projects

Abolish the legal gender marker entirely. No government can be trusted to have a database of which people have changed theirs, no government has any business tracking what your gender is "supposed" to be in the first place.
