In my fifth-grade class, there was a book on one of the shelves in the back about various historic disasters, and I was obsessed with it. Couldn't remember the title, only that it was a coffee table jobber and had lurid chapter titles in big block text. Finally found a scan yesterday.

Dude who studies the history of the Top 40 format here: It is *absolutely* possible to miss a high charting song in the wild, ESPECIALLY so in the age of the algorithm and radio audiences siloed off and radio nowhere near as ubiquitous a part of life as it used to be.

I sensed it but not enough to articulate at the time, but the "poptimism" trend always struck me as being less about bringing down elitist barriers and more about inverting them. Going from "Oh, you don't listen to Bartok? Tsk tsk" to "YOU MUST KNOW THIS TAYLOR SWIFT JAM, YOU ASSHOLE."

The ironic thing is that I *did* get exposed to a lot of the “country goes mainstream” explosion stuff in the early 1990s, and what I took away from it is “wow is this a load of paint by numbers pandering to stereotypes about rural folks.”

Found a 1991 MTV doc about Gen X before it fully became a brand, and despite the typical demo fluffing it answered the question of "why are they like this?" 35 years ago. Spoiler: Because they are the opposite of a monolithic block and just weakly connected by a few cultural touchstones.
