Digging in on the latest economic data, it's clear that inflation is a policy choice of the federal government (tariffs + Iran war) and we're sacrificing the labor market for the hope it can be solved via monetary policy.

Just refereed my first substantially AI generated paper for a good journal. Even with tougher desk rejection standards these things can look convincing until you start to look more closely and it all falls apart. Pretty bleak!

I was always told that one of the central lessons of the Shoah is that legal, juridical regimes can still be immoral. The claim that Anne Frank was in Amsterdam "legally" is false, but more than that, the question "Was Anne Frank an illegal?" is so grossly missing the point of Holocaust remembrance.

One last (sobering) update on the #EconJobMarket before the winter holidays; data as of 2025-12-14. In terms of # of job listings on Job Openings for Economists (JOE), this is the worst job mkt in recent yrs for PhD Economists. # jobs down 20% from last yr, even 18.9% lower than during COVID (2020).

In today's JMP blog, @jiaweilyu.bsky.social studies impact of affirmative action for men in China's civil service. Women outperform men in the entry exam, so quotas were introduced to balance gender.
