Excited (and grateful!) to share that I’ll be spending the upcoming academic year as a Postdoctoral Fellow at @nber.org. I hope to connect with researchers throughout the year. If your department or research group is hosting a seminar, I’d love to connect! 🤩

PSA to fellow economists- if African countries are the preferred sites for randomized experiments to place papers in top 5 economics journals, then the history, institutions, and people/scholars of African countries are more than good enough to study as "general interest" and co-authors 1/n #Econsky

"... slashing and burning won’t improve matters. It’s just going to weaken the foremost truth squad in American education, the chief sponsor and funder of rigorous analysis, reliable data, and clear-eyed evaluations in a realm that needs more of those things, not less."

Easy, DOGE. IES matters.
The federal role in education dates to 1867 when President Andrew Johnson signed legislation creating the first “Department of Education” for the purpose of:

My thoughts on cuts to science via NIH and IES It is: ILLEGAL: the funding has been congressionally mandated IDIOTIC: the multiplier effects of R&D are big in the moment (local econs) and huge in the long run (innovation) IMMORAL: knowledge is—hear me out—good; chaos and destruction are bad

If you or someone you know has had a particular research project suspended by recent actions at IES, please get in touch either by DM or by replying here. There are journalists who'd like to report on this.

GovWayBack. govwayback.com
GovWayback
Access historical versions of U.S. government websites from before January 20, 2025 with a simple URL change.

How it works: Take any .gov URL and add wayback.com right after .gov, and you'll be redirected to the Wayback Machine's archived version of the page.
Examples:

Simple domain:
www.epa.gov → www.epa.govwayback.com

Specific page:
www.whitehouse.gov/administration → www.whitehouse.govwayback.com/administration

Complex URL:
www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-bill/2 → www.congress.govwayback.com/bill/118th-congress/house-bill/2

Gutted that so much of what I’m building my career on is under attack, between the dismantling of IES and the relentless attacks on Latino immigrant communities. I guess I can expect my IES grant supporting a study on bilingual education in Texas to be canceled any day now 😥
