The combination of earnings inequality and economic stagnation has led to the growing importance of wealth, and a decline in social mobility. Economic inequalities have also resulted directly in dangerous differences between regions and in political power across groups.

Inequality is a dynamic, multidimensional process incl. income, work, wealth, place & health. Tackling it means more than redistribution: it demands growth, stronger labour markets & policies for opportunity. @pjtheeconomist.bsky.social @richardblundell.bsky.social et al. ow.ly/qYsU50YQqm6 #EconSky
Geographically, the UK has developed an unusually extreme regional divide. High skill jobs cluster in London and the South East, benefiting from powerful agglomeration effects. But a country the size of the UK should have at least two or three other successfully agglomerated areas to attain its full productive potential. The figure shows that, in terms of GDP per worker, the UK regions have steadily fallen further behind not just London but also the EU average.

In many advanced economies, including the UK, progress towards a fairer society appears to have stalled. Deep structural forces – including weak earnings growth, rising wealth divides, regional disparities and declining social mobility – are reshaping life chances and fuelling political discontent. A new book drawing on the IFS Deaton Review, “Challenging Inequalities”, argues that inequality must be understood as a dynamic, multidimensional process spanning income, work, wealth, place and health. Tackling it requires more than redistribution: it demands growth, stronger labour markets and policies that shape opportunities before inequalities take root.
