#LastSeen on Apple TV is much better than I expected! Not life-changing or anything, but a solid jolt of suspense.

A recent bout of forced AI use at work ended with someone saying they “hope [I] will go be an AI evangelist to my teammates after this”...

I reposted one of the screenshots from America’s stupid chatbot thing yday and then thought better of it. So just reupping my longtime refrain: Don’t talk to them, even for a joke! You’ve seen screenshots of the Minecraft thing - you don’t need to waste the water to try it yourself!

AI boosters always want to argue “but it’s so useful!” and I reject the premise of that argument. Its utility or lack thereof is completely irrelevant to someone whose job (or breathable air, or clean water, or green space, etc.) was sacrificed on the altar of AI.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Your thoughts are all you have. Your experiences, your unique way of seeing the world, your tastes. These are hard-won, often over decades of exploration. You may have to read hundreds of books or watch hundreds of movies that you don't even like to arrive at what you do. If you're a writer or artist, you might have to spend years being bad at the thing you love before one day, you aren't so bad anymore. That work is worth doing.

I think this premise is just plain wrong. I’m one of the lefty AI haters he’s referring to, and I’ve never touched it *voluntarily, in my own time, or on a personal device*. I am FORCED to use it at work, so I know exactly what I’m talking about when I say it ain’t shit.
In many corners of the internet, especially on the left, people pride themselves on never touching the stuff - while simultaneously making bold, deeply mistaken claims about its nature and capabilities.
I understand the reluctance to give these companies your money, your data, your attention. But using what is increasingly an indispensable technology is not an endorsement of the industry building it, any more so than using Instagram to advocate for aggressive regulations on social media would be an endorsement of Mark Zuckerberg's toxic empire.
Moreover, the people using Al are going to outcompete the ones who don't, bending the world in their preferred direction, while forming a deeper understanding of the technology itself. Bosses will use Claude Code to replace workers, while the leftist policy analyst Matt Bruenig is having it build a publicly accessible, automatically updating database of National Labor Relations Board decisions. If you're serious about your mission, you should use whichever tools work best.

The past few months, I feel like I’m in a constant state of worry. I don’t know if it’s just these “interesting” times, an ageing thing, or a problem. If the we rose up as one tomorrow and installed a benevolent, corrective, moral gov’t, would I still find SOMETHING to keep me up at night?

While reminding me to go spray the entrance/exit, Mom said, “Your father is worried they’re building a nest inside the ceiling/exterior wall”. I DID NOT EVEN KNOW THAT WAS A THING??? Anyway, this attempt to get me to DIY has very much backfired bc I’m calling my professional bug murderer today.

On a better note, have this screenshot I took from Jon Ronson’s The Castle this morning. The whole thing is very shareable, but I’m refraining bc you should get your own copy. (And you’re welcome for the 8am too-lazy-to-get-my-glasses font size 😘)

Noon on the east coast, and we have officially reached the Backlash To The Backlash phase of posting about The Song! Those who love The Song are snarking defensively about how anyone who hasn’t heard it is a crusty snobby bitch. You can like it! That’s fine! “I haven’t heard it” ≠ “it’s crap”!

In last night’s dream, I read a web comic over & over but didn’t get it. Glanced down at my hand to find the comic tattooed on my palm. Got lost/forgot who I was while running an errand for my Mom. The cops trying to ID me took a blood sample from the knuckle of my thumb.

It is objectively nuts to insist that everyone MUST have heard this song when the single defining characteristic of our time is that everyone is siloed off in their own personal media/culture cocoon.(I also have not heard the song)

Still working through this week’s playlist and found another case in point! Granted it’s Tom Morello, and he’s always been “political” (laudatory), but this kind of message is really A Thing this week!
Song lyrics screen from Apple Music:
ADJOURN Adjourn It (feat. Ser) Tank
Tom Morello

Make them pay for their crimes

Adjourn it

Never buy their racist lies

Unearth it

Help our brothers, sisters stay

They've earned it

LRT is sthg I was thinking about earlier. Sometimes non-college-educated people I know seem to think I did book reports for 4 yrs. No, it was about learning HOW to read! Whose POV are you getting? Who doesn’t get to speak? Why not? Is the narrator reliable? …and those are the most basic questions!

context. sentiment. inferences. People seriously cannot do these things anymore. That’s why they angrily demand you spell out every joke, every reference, super duper promise you mean something only this one prescribed way. They cannot do it for themselves or tolerate the any ambiguity.

This week’s New Music Playlist from All Songs Considered has lots more urgent, at-least-tangentially political music than usual. It feels like a tidal wave of Artistic Response coming out of nowhere. Is it a fluke? An indication of an *actual* vibe shift? Just a new person picking the songs?

The fantasy that you can make an existential threat to the earth worse in the short term because maybe somehow magically in the long term it will solve it in some magical way already dismissed is part of artificial idiocy. We have the solutions. We just need to implement them.
