Decades since I’ve read Richard Hughes. Used to be enthralled by the ravishing beauty of some of his prose, like the description of the dolphins in In Hazard, but something repellent about his attitude of disdainful superiority to his characters’ own understanding of themselves & their situations.

Kemi Badenoch wants to exempt the family home from inheritance tax. But that creates a perverse incentive for elderly people to *upsize* to save IHT. That could double the cost of the policy, and push £100bn+ from savings into housing. A 🧵 on bad tax cuts.

Vividly colourful autumn leaves, berries and wildlife, including a red admiral butterfly and a red squirrel, photographed during my visit to St Andrews Botanic Garden last week. Have a great #Friday everyone!
A collage of four photographs taken at St Andrews Botanic Garden. Left: branches covered in brilliant pink, red, orange and green autumn leaves, with small red berries. Top right: sprays of tiny red berries among green leaves. Bottom centre: a red admiral butterfly with orange, black and white wings spread among pale lilac asters with yellow centres. Bottom right: a red squirrel with tufted ears, reddish-brown fur and a white chest, sitting upright in the grass and looking towards the camera.

Two novels I reread every now and then (without understanding all the words) are Giono's Regain and Colline. I first came across him via Un de Baumugnes but find the style of the speaker in that irritating. Anyone recommend a clearly printed edition of Le chant du monde? Mine is disintegrating.

In Devonshire goldenrod is called ‘farewell-to-summer’ because it blooms from August through September. It is said to grow where secret hoards of gold are hidden, and if it unexpectedly appears near a dwelling, then the inhabitants will surely have good fortune. #FlowersOnFriday
Collage of goldenrod flowering in late summer. Tall stems carry abundant arching sprays of tiny golden-yellow flowers above narrow green leaves. Close-up views show the feathery flower clusters, with a bumblebee visiting one bloom.

Another Look at Odysseus #1
This is the first instalment of groups of 3 poems selected from my 2010 sequence of poems which takes Homer's The Odyssey as its starting point. The full sequence of 22 poems first appeared in Hurt (Enitharmon Press). I have written about the development of the sequence in an earlier blog post here. Summer is over upon the sea. Elizabeth Bishop, from Complete Poems (1969)
SONG

Summer is over upon the sea. The pleasure yacht, the social being, that danced on the endless polished floor, stepped and side-stepped like Fred Astaire, is gone, is gone, docked somewhere ashore.
The friends have left, the sea is bare
that was strewn with floating, fresh green weeds. Only the rusty-sided freighters
go past the moon's marketless craters
and the stars are the only ships of pleasure.

‘Sarn Rhiw’ - #RSThomas (Destinations, Celandine 1985). This is where RS Thomas and his wife Elsi Eldridge lived in retirement.
Text of poem -

SARN RHIW.
So we know
she must have said something to him - What language, life? Oh, what language?
Thousands of years later
I inhabit a house whose stone is the language of its builders. Here
by the sea they said little.
But their message to the future was: Build well. In the fire of an evening I catch faces
staring at me. In April, when light quickens and clouds thin, boneless presences flit through my room.
Will they inherit me one day? What certainties have I to hand on like the punctuality
with which, at the moon's rising, the bay breaks
into a smile as though meaning were not the difficulty at all?A peaceful coastal landscape viewed from a hillside. In the foreground is Sarn Rhiw, a rustic stone cottage surrounded by tall grass and trees, while below stretches the curved shoreline of Porth Neigwl and calm blue water. The scene is framed by leafy branches, with distant cliffs and hazy hills under a clear, sunny sky.Sarn Rhiw, a whitewashed stone cottage, sits amid lush greenery and ferns, with a narrow stone path leading to a pale green door. The cottage has a weathered slate roof and stone chimneys, backed by dense trees under a bright blue, cloudless sky. The scene feels quiet, rustic, and secluded.

In the new papal encyclical from Pope Leo XIV, Magnifica Humanitas, the pontiff quotes Gandalf from The Return of the King within his larger discussion of defending the dignity of humanity in the age of AI. www.vatican.va/content/leo-...
213. The twentieth-century Catholic author J.R.R. Tolkien, in the words of a protagonist of one of his novels, described our responsibility in this way: “It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till.” The civilization of love will not arise from a single spectacular gesture, but from the sum total of small and steadfast acts of fidelity that serve as a bulwark against dehumanization. For this reason, it is worthwhile pausing to reflect on some aspects of how we, each in our own way, can cooperate in building the civilization of love. Without presuming to exhaust this theme, I would like to propose five paths toward daily and public responsibility: the need to disarm words, building peace through justice, adopting the perspective of victims, cultivating a healthy realism and reviving dialogue and multilateralism.

The Strickland Brooch, AD 800s. A fabulous example of Anglo-Saxon creativity and craftsmanship! This large silver disc brooch is inlaid with gold and niello, and decorated in ‘Trewhiddle-style’ with an intricate pattern of puppy-like animals. 📷 British Museum #Archaeology
The British Museum photo shows a large silver disc brooch, known as the Strickland Brooch. It is made of silver inlaid with gold and niello (a black metallic alloy).

The surface of the brooch has intricately carved Trewhiddle-style decoration. Trewhiddle style is a distinctive Anglo-Saxon style of ornamentation, particularly for metalwork, that includes the use of silver, niello inlay, and intricate, animal, plant and geometric designs. This style takes its name from the Trewhiddle Hoard from Cornwall.

The Strickland Brooch brooch has a central cruciform (cross-shaped) design with a silver boss (dome) at its centre. Each of the four arms of the cruciform design end with an identical animal head. The cruciform design sits within a quatrefoil, that is a shape similar to a four-petalled flower. At the point where two petals join, there is an animal head, making four in total, identical to the four animal heads of the cruciform shape. All the heads were once set with blue glass eyes. The surface of the compartments formed between the animal heads, is decorated with collared puppy-like Trewhiddle-style beasts. Four silver bosses are arranged evenly around the perimeter of the brooch. The outer edge of the brooch is bordered by a fine beaded rim. Brooch diameter : 11.2 cm.
