You Won’t Like This But You Should

Sometimes people are best seen as places,
the one I love
is pure Mumbles:
a Newton Road, displaying its unfussy
honest charm;
that corner table too,
snug
at the back
of Joe’s Icecream;
where blue skies are always within reach
despite the occasional
and hurriedly bussed-through
rain.

Question: is this equally offensive if it's a reply poem, not an extension of your poem? I ask because sometimes I do this, usually with haiku poets I interact with. Usually I tag those #CallAndResponse (also use for poems headed w/quotes) If this is rude or intrusive, maybe I need to rethink.

There is a field that does not exist on any map
you cannot search for it, you cannot ask directions
no road signs point toward it, the field finds you
usually, when you have lost someone
when grief has found a room inside your soul
where every breath and every memory, echoes there
when you walk down a familiar road
when you walk beside a river, you have known all your life
suddenly the world changes, everything stands still
the songs of the birds have faded to silence
and before you, is a vast field
if your heart is unbroken, you will see nothing there
just weeds, or stones, warming in the sun
but if your heart is broken, in your grieving, you will see
fields of wild dahlias, stretching toward the horizon
their colours so vivid that they don’t seem real
each flower belongs, to someone you know
your heart, will lead you, like an invisible thread
soon you will find a wild dahlia, standing with the others
do not pick it, for the dead cannot be carried home
you may speak, tell them everything, you never said
that you are angry, that you forgive them
tell them about the songs, that you cannot listen to
tell them how strange it is, that the world
continued turning, after theirs stopped
the wild dahlias will listen, their petals trembling
now a fragrance you remember
is slowly drifting in upon the breeze
and you hear a voice answering
something from the heart
‘I know’, that is all, ‘I know'

A small study in distance, denial and cut flowers. #poemsabout #rot #poetrysky #poetsky
STILL FLOWERS

The flowers lasted eighteen days.
I know because I counted.

By six, the water had gone cloudy.
By nine, the first stem bent.
By thirteen, they had started
leaning on each other
for structural reasons.

I changed the water anyway.

From the kitchen door
they still looked like flowers.

I tried the hallway.

Still flowers.

The sofa:
flowers.

Three feet away:

less convincing.

Up close
they had become
a collection of failures,
minor and major.

Apparently beauty
has a minimum viewing distance.

Nobody tells you this.

Museums know it.

Pointillists knew it.

By eighteen
I knew it too.

Protect the Triple Lock
Britain doesn’t have to choose between a decent pension and decent care. We can — and should — provide both.

Your 'doom quote' for today: "A general warming trend is expected because of rising greenhouse-gas emissions, but this sudden heat spike greatly exceeds predictions made by statistical climate models that rely on past observations." www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Climate models can’t explain 2023’s huge heat anomaly — we could be in uncharted territory
Taking into account all known factors, the planet warmed 0.2 °C more last year than climate scientists expected. More and better data are urgently needed.

How about taxing the people with private jets, the frequent flyers, the people whose carbon footprint is destroying the planet? That way you could reduce inequality, fund social care, invest in home grown renewables, and restore sanity to the climate to improve food security. Win, win, win, win.

As a kid, I thought adults had everything figured out. Now I get excited when the store has my favorite bread, I have no idea what I’m doing half the time, and I’m pretty sure everyone else is winging it too. Here’s some poems. 💙💙💙 #poetry #blueskypoets #writingcommunity #BlueSkyPoetry #SkyPoet
A humorous, affectionate poem about how growing older changes our definition of happiness, until something as ordinary as buying a good kitchen sponge becomes a small shared joy.
The Good Sponge
When I was young,
I dreamed of having money,
freedom,
and a house of my own.
Yesterday,
I bought a new kitchen sponge.
I showed it to my wife.
She agreed
it was a good sponge.
I don't know
when this became happiness,
but I think
we're doing okay.A playful poem about the endless responsibilities of adulthood, particularly the exhausting realization that deciding what to make for dinner is a problem that returns every single day.
Dinner Again
Nobody warned me
that adulthood meant
deciding what to eat
every single day
for the rest
of my natural life.
I made dinner yesterday.
Apparently,
that doesn't count
for today.
At this point,
I'd welcome
a little jury duty.A reflective poem about reaching the age your father was when you believed he knew everything, and realizing that his confidence may have concealed the same uncertainty and fear you experience as an adult.
The Age My Father Was
I reached the age
my father was
when I thought
he knew everything.
I remember asking him
what we should do
when something went wrong.
He always had an answer.
Now I wonder
how many times
he was just as frightened
as I am,
and answered anyway.A warm, relatable poem about never quite feeling like a proper adult, despite managing everyday responsibilities. It suggests that growing up may simply mean caring for others and doing your best without knowing all the answers.
No Instructions Included
I thought someday
I'd wake up
and feel like an adult.
Instead,
I lose my keys,
forget why I entered rooms,
and occasionally eat cereal
over the kitchen sink.
But the bills get paid.
The dog gets fed.
Someone I love
knows they are loved.
Maybe growing up
isn't knowing what you're doing.
Maybe it's doing your best
without the instructions
