We are 24 years away from when the world needs to be at net zero carbon emissions. Fossil fuel infrastructure and even some appliances have about a 25-year design life. That means that every gas power plant, gas pipeline, or gas boiler you install today is a middle finger pointed at your grandkids.

Solar Energy Corporation of India just auctioned 1 GW of renewable power that has to match a coal plant's schedule — checked every 15 minutes, penalties for shortfalls. It cleared at ₹5.25/kWh (~$55/MWh), fixed for 25 years. New comparable coal PPAs opened at ₹5.38-6.30 plus fuel price inflation.

As a kid, I had 1-square-yard of flowerbed, too shady for flowers, so I used it to germinate acorns, conkers etc (big seeds = easy to handle), then planted them out at the forest-boundary behind the house, dozens of trees, all because I heard a version of this story: rebellibrary.com/the-man-who-...

Measuring energy usage in units of Primary Energy is like measuring nutrition in acres. People need food, not food waste or land inefficiently farmed. People need energy services not thermal waste or fossil fuels inefficiently extracted. Time to measure what matters. #PrimaryEnergyFallacy

This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.

A gentle reminder that if we miss the 1.5°C target (and we certainly will), the next target is 1.51°C and not 2°C. We need to keep fighting. Every tonne of CO₂ emitted makes the job of future CO₂ removal harder, and every 0.01°C of temperature increase makes the world more chaotic and dangerous.
Cover from The Economist from two years ago "Say goodbye to 1.5°C; why climate policy is off target". It has a graphic of the Earth with an apple on its head, and a arrow shot through the Earth.

If you want 1.5C, 1.8C, 2C, overshoot, no-overshoot, etc, then they all require the same thing: rapid short-term emission reductions reaching net zero CO2 emissions as soon as possible. This has been clear from the IPCC Special Report on 1.5C, which depicts "overshoot" on its cover! 1/
