A grumpy sun being eclipsed in an early fourteenth-century compendium of literary, historical, grammatical, scientific, astronomical, theological, pastoral and devotional texts. cudl.lib.cam.ac.uk/view/MS-GG-0...
The image is a detail from a page in a medieval manuscript. The background is being and there are five lines of black writing at the top of the frame. It is cropped to focus on a large bluish circle on top of which are superimposed two smaller greenish blue circles aligned with a yellow and orange sun with a grumpy look on its face.

Late Call for Papers

Leeds International Medieval Congress, 6th-9th July 2026

Constructing Masculinities and Ideas of Manhood in the Premodern World

In their 2017 work on Scottish manhood, Professors Lynn Abrams and Elizabeth Ewan stated that ‘Men are everywhere in the narratives of Scotland’s past, but at the same time they are nowhere, or at least their gendered selves, roles and practices are less frequently interrogated than women’s.’ This claim is true for Scottish history as it is for histories across the premodern world. While the study of masculinities has become more popular in recent decades, investigating the gendered lives of premodern men remains understudied. This panel aims to reflect on gender as a relational social construction and masculinities as a category in the social and political realms of the premodern world.

Potential applicants are invited to send proposals for papers of 15-20 minutes. Paper topics may include (but are not limited to):

·       Masculinities and their change over time and lifecycles
·       Male gender as a trigger for class conflict
·       Ideals of masculine identity compared to lived experience
·       Literary depictions of masculinity, idealised and denigratory
·       Reflections of masculinity in visual and material culture
·       Male identity across race, religion, and geography
·       Masculinities and their intersections with queer and disability studies
·       Clerical and hagiographical masculinity
·       Non-conforming maleness

Applicants are invited to send an abstract of no more than 200 words, including a proposed title, short biography (including research interests and institution), 3-5 keywords and preference for in-person or virtual paper delivery. Please send this information to Nick Munn (n.l.munn@qmul.ac.uk) by Wednesday 20th May 2026, 17:00 BST (GMT+1).

If you require any further information or have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out!

Last week, Farage was demanding a ban on "mass religious observances" in public spaces and described Muslim prayers in Trafalgar Square as "provocative" and an attempt to "intimidate and dominate" UK society. This week, he's defending the "free speech" of a multimillionaire who celebrates Hitler.
If we start banning people from
entering the country because
we don't like what they say,
worry where that ends up... it's
a dangerous path to go down.

Oh yes
This is a detail of a medieval manuscript page with an illustration of an elephant. Sort of. The basic elephant parts are there, but it's ears are far too small and it isn't really elephant shaped. It looks like a labrador wearing a false trunk. The animal in the image is pale beige and is standing in green water against a deep red background which is tipple with a design of pale dots. Medieval handwritten text is visible beneath the image. The manuscript it's from is Bodleian Library, MS. Douce 308 (Bestiaire d'amour) and you can find this stunner on folio 105r.

The lower part of the building is in shadow. The sky in the background is blue and cloudless.A photo of a black and white timber framed building in the street known as Steep Hill in Lincoln. It is jetted, meaning the upper two floors protrude out over the floors beneath. The building is on the corner of a street, which to the left of the image slopes steeply downwards.

The focus of the image is an ancient-looking arch which is built of honey-coloured stone and which looks to be crumbling in places.
