Why is our union still just talking about pay disparity? Please fight for our sector, fight the funding model that obviously doesn't work and that has made us look tens of thousands of colleagues, however paid. If a fight with the Secretary of State is difficult then have the fight over that.

#NZD4eva! [NZD, Passion for History, p. 67.]
DC: Do you defend history because you see it as a source of social or ethical utility, in the sense it could help orient us in history…
NZD: I would say ‘useful’ in a very special sense. What human beings have done in the past, the enormous range in ways of living and possible actions, is a source both of hope and despair. how fascinating it is to consider this variety in human events. We can draw hope from it in the sense that if things have been different in the past, perhaps we’re in a position to make them a little different today [laughter] — at least a little bit different. When I say ‘usefulness’, I don’t mean that history offers us models that we can apply — the details of different situations are too unlike each other. History offer us ideas, points of view, perspectives, landmarks, indices — possibilities.

I appreciate that Dolly Parton refused to participate in "dress respectability" and, by her own account, modeled her aesthetic after a town "tramp," who she thought was beautiful. She separated aesthetics from character and understood "classiness" to be about how you treat people, not how you dress.

As this is a #LowCountries event, let me add Johan Huizinga sending Nazis packing in 1933--partly because it's not a straightforward hero story. You don't have a duty to platform hatred; you do have a duty to safeguard institutions you're the caretaker of. www.universiteitleiden.nl/en/news/2019...
On 18 September 1933, Huizinga passed on the Rector’s baton to his successor. In Pieterskerk he reflected on the turbulent months behind him, ‘To enjoy the freedom to remain true to its calling, a university must apply its own standards to determine its duty and honour. And [a university] will believe that on occasion action is required that simply serves to defend the hallowed ground on which it stands.’

Today is July 25th, often celebrated as the fall of Italian fascism. Mussolini passed draconian controls over pasta production which he considered decadent and overly reliant on foreign grain. Today, we celebrate his fall with a simple, defiant partisan dish: 1) Pasta 2) Creamy butter 3) Parmesan

When I assign analysis, I am not trying to extract a polished product; I am trying to put the student’s mind through resistance in order to make it stronger. Offloading the struggle to a chatbot does not “free students up for higher-order work.” It deprives them of building the strength to do any substantial cognitive work at all.

Historical research does not need to be done faster or in greater volume for any social or intellectual purpose whatever; if anything, it needs to be done more slowly and deliberately than at present, by people allowed the training, time, space, and resources to do it that way.

Late Call for Papers

Leeds International Medieval Congress, 6th-9th July 2026

Constructing Masculinities and Ideas of Manhood in the Premodern World

In their 2017 work on Scottish manhood, Professors Lynn Abrams and Elizabeth Ewan stated that ‘Men are everywhere in the narratives of Scotland’s past, but at the same time they are nowhere, or at least their gendered selves, roles and practices are less frequently interrogated than women’s.’ This claim is true for Scottish history as it is for histories across the premodern world. While the study of masculinities has become more popular in recent decades, investigating the gendered lives of premodern men remains understudied. This panel aims to reflect on gender as a relational social construction and masculinities as a category in the social and political realms of the premodern world.

Potential applicants are invited to send proposals for papers of 15-20 minutes. Paper topics may include (but are not limited to):

·       Masculinities and their change over time and lifecycles
·       Male gender as a trigger for class conflict
·       Ideals of masculine identity compared to lived experience
·       Literary depictions of masculinity, idealised and denigratory
·       Reflections of masculinity in visual and material culture
·       Male identity across race, religion, and geography
·       Masculinities and their intersections with queer and disability studies
·       Clerical and hagiographical masculinity
·       Non-conforming maleness

Applicants are invited to send an abstract of no more than 200 words, including a proposed title, short biography (including research interests and institution), 3-5 keywords and preference for in-person or virtual paper delivery. Please send this information to Nick Munn (n.l.munn@qmul.ac.uk) by Wednesday 20th May 2026, 17:00 BST (GMT+1).

If you require any further information or have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out!
