'Committal' by @samueltongue.bsky.social badlilies.uk/samuel-tongue
Committal
A hill to die on, not once but many times.
Even in this airlock of a burial cairn, I hear the drumming of a big heart, a sizzle of rain, & the newly electrified trains running their static. This lair is a quiet den, a bone-deep home, the wind about its business outside, & the motorway full of toys.
I lost my gloves climbing this wet street, a scuff quartered from a precious hill.
The ancients ourselves knew to keep the dead tightly bound, ligatured for birth through death's tight canal.
Fine pottery, stone-axe heads, food & drink. We have finished the bread you had left in the freezer, the last piece as good as the first. On a clear day, we can see coast-to-coast from here.

I think a problem with a lot of 'retellings' is that the writer goes in with an attitude like they've 'solved' the original story, or 'corrected' it in some way. That usually results in something bad. But a writer who is in conversation with the work, who is exploring different elements? better.

To jump off this point to something else - this is the thought process that leads to people thinking feeling 'uncomfortable' gives them the right to destroy the percieved source. It's what leads to fascist and exterminatory thought process.

there's some fiction where i'm like, "i think this was executed in a pretty tasteless/insensitive way" or "okay so i think this author's irl values were/are kind of reprehensible, and perhaps we can see that reflected in xyz parts of their fiction,' but i try really hard to not let it lapse into

i don't think fiction has to be moral *both* in the sense that i don't think it has to be didactic or depict admirable behavior, and in the sense that i think it's neutral if it *does* actively celebrate/glamorize immoral behavior, operates according to a very different value system than mine, etc

This Etruscan alabastron (or perfume vase) is made from terracotta in the shape of a (somewhat languid) rabbit. If you’ve ever had a rabbit as a pet, the flattened ears and rear legs stretched out behind (here sadly broken) indicate a rabbit at ease & feeling safe. 🕰️650-500 BC 🏛️📷 The Met, NY

Rough day, so have a poem about the Jar of Moles in the Grant Zoology Museum in London that everyone has regarded as too thoroughly batshit to publish
Jar of Moles (Grant Zoology Museum, London)
crittery dozened things each pink snout snootling
formaldehyde up it's bamboozler which poor fuck
had to collect them out in the dirt with a shovel
here moley moley BONK . I’m only gonna
put you in a jar and let tourists go eww at you
for the next two hundred years god look at me
for two hundred years I’d do anything look
mummy, one of them’s licking the glass—
honey it's dead velvety sweet sardined hope
their ghosts are friends teeming in a molish
afterlife dark and circular everything worm-
flavoured tasty buggy snackerels what if
you smashed the mole jar? vinegared
moles spilling out flaccid & swimming
everyone screaming someone saying Freddy
you gotta get us a new jar of moles—
—goddammit boss I never asked for any of this
A jar of wet preserved moles, the jar is very full and all the little hands, feet and snoots mark it as both upsetting and fascinating

"After he retired to the cave prayer grew in him like a forest, sowed its seeds inside his psyche, rewilded his heart. He didn’t see that centuries had passed without him."
A Saint looks up from his prayers to
discover he’s been dead for some time
For St Robert of Knaresborough
By Jay Hulme - from 'The Vanishing Song'

After he retired to the cave
prayer grew in him like a forest,
sowed its seeds inside his psyche,
rewilded his heart. He didn’t
see that centuries had passed
without him.
                              One day he
looked up, hearing requests for
intercession, and the woods were
older than expected, the riverbanks
shifted by the years —
                                              and as he
knelt before the altar in his hermit's
church, his knees disappeared below
the edges of his emptied grave.

Publishers and Editors! I'm taking subs for Vol. 3 of the award-nominated "Best Weird Fiction of the Year" til end of the year. Writers! You'll get a chance to submit your 2026 stories in January. bestspecfic(at)gmail.com

Esteemed Editors and Publishers,

I am now taking submissions of original 2026 short fiction projects — magazines, anthologies, single-author collections — for consideration in The Best Weird Fiction of the Year, Vol. 3. (Publishing Sept. 2027). Vol. 1 is a World fantasy Award Finalist.

I am seeking material first published this year, in 2026. To be clear, only weird fiction FIRST published in 2026 is eligible for inclusion in this volume. I will accept translated work as long as the first English-language publication was 2026.

Stories should be between 500 and 17,499 words. Audio only stories are also ineligible, unless they also appeared as text.

Publishers and editors are encouraged to send electronic or digital copies, via the email address below. (I am not accepting hard copy submissions.) ePubs are preferred, but I will also accept text files (Word), Mobi, or PDF. Please do not cherry-pick selections. Send the entire book, journal, or magazine to:

bestspecfic@gmail.com

Thank you for your time and kind consideration.

Warm Wishes,

Michael

Much as we love bookshops, they need more than love to keep going. A bookshop can be the centre of a whole community. Bookshops support authors; organize events. A thriving bookshop teaches the next generation that literacy matters. So don't just love your bookshop: actually buy books there.

Did you know that "Abracadabra" has been used as a practical magic spell since antiquity? The earliest known mention comes from the 2nd-century book "Liber Medicinalis," where it appears on a triangular amulet as a method for treating malaria. And it has been used on amulets through history.
Silver talisman in the shape of a cross, with magical words very similar to the famous "Abracadabra". 6th/7th century.
