Late Call for Papers

Leeds International Medieval Congress, 6th-9th July 2026

Constructing Masculinities and Ideas of Manhood in the Premodern World

In their 2017 work on Scottish manhood, Professors Lynn Abrams and Elizabeth Ewan stated that ‘Men are everywhere in the narratives of Scotland’s past, but at the same time they are nowhere, or at least their gendered selves, roles and practices are less frequently interrogated than women’s.’ This claim is true for Scottish history as it is for histories across the premodern world. While the study of masculinities has become more popular in recent decades, investigating the gendered lives of premodern men remains understudied. This panel aims to reflect on gender as a relational social construction and masculinities as a category in the social and political realms of the premodern world.

Potential applicants are invited to send proposals for papers of 15-20 minutes. Paper topics may include (but are not limited to):

·       Masculinities and their change over time and lifecycles
·       Male gender as a trigger for class conflict
·       Ideals of masculine identity compared to lived experience
·       Literary depictions of masculinity, idealised and denigratory
·       Reflections of masculinity in visual and material culture
·       Male identity across race, religion, and geography
·       Masculinities and their intersections with queer and disability studies
·       Clerical and hagiographical masculinity
·       Non-conforming maleness

Applicants are invited to send an abstract of no more than 200 words, including a proposed title, short biography (including research interests and institution), 3-5 keywords and preference for in-person or virtual paper delivery. Please send this information to Nick Munn (n.l.munn@qmul.ac.uk) by Wednesday 20th May 2026, 17:00 BST (GMT+1).

If you require any further information or have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out!

Last week, Farage was demanding a ban on "mass religious observances" in public spaces and described Muslim prayers in Trafalgar Square as "provocative" and an attempt to "intimidate and dominate" UK society. This week, he's defending the "free speech" of a multimillionaire who celebrates Hitler.
If we start banning people from

we don't like what they say,
worry where that ends up... it's
a dangerous path to go down.
