I'm not even watching because I couldn't bear it if he stays longer than any of the lovely people. (and I support Jane bringing back "prize chump" as perfect insult)

It's October, I've just mowed the grass in hot blazing sunshine, a towel/bedding laundry load is hanging to dry (thank you again lovely washing-machine-owning neighbours) and lunch is avocado on toasted bagel. When I began that, there was a point. But I've meandered off it. Sorry. Am very tired.

“Caregiver” means a person who gives care. Why doesn’t “caretaker” mean someone who takes care away? Just give me one week with the English language and I will make shit right.

Jackie Jackson died two days ago. His death did not get the fanfare that the big celebrities get but I assure you he was no less than any of them: a titan astride the earth. In this thread, a few of the songs he played bass on. You know these songs. You know their bass parts. youtu.be/DKVB_CtU8XQ

Honestly, when I read the latest updates from the US, most of my energy is taken up by parsing who has blocked what attempt to deny progress in what someone was trying to overturn from a decision made before the recent ruling that upheld another verdict.

Look, I've been busy and just seeing those "terrorists Trump knew all about" have been released. Please say anyone who is left in the White House pool asks question after question about what Don knew about whatever British rural crime these crimers did. Because apparently he knew ALL about 'em.

After a lifetime of exposure to test cricket, today I FINALLY looked up the power play fielding rules of one day games, which I never realised existed. I did wonder how everyone scored so many runs all the time. Just proves (again) how you can enjoy TMS burbling without having a scoobie #TheCricket

Finally settled (as near to me as possible OF COURSE). Going to vet for his regular arthritis jab next week, plus a general check because he has started licking/biting his waist and back legs. I can't see any rash or flea evidence. God knows what's going on. Old dog stuff.

What’s wrong with modern poetry — and how to fix it
Too difficult? Too attention-seeking? Too quiet? In three books, poets Lavinia Greenlanw, Alice Oswald and Denise Riley, wonder what ails the artform

Walking through this field, a heron was flapping slowly around. Circled a couple of times, then settled in a tree the other side of the burn. Somehow I don't expect herons to land in trees. They are massive. What do you mean, you can't see it? hang on
grassy field near us, then over the fence longer scrubby grass up to a burn we can't see, then birches, then on the far hill conifers. About half way up one of the conifers, the heron is sitting. I promise. Look, I'm never going to win cameraperson of the year.

Yes, all in all, I can recommend Cary Elwes’ ‘As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride’ highly. William Goldman’s 1993 tribute to André is lovely, too: books.google.co.uk/books?id=DBo...
...Gone at 46, he was the most popular figure on any movie set I've ever been on. If he asked you to dinner, he paid, but when you asked him, he paid. One actor, after several free meals, snuck into the kitchen to pay. He felt himself being lifted up in the air. The actor was Arnold Schwarzenegger: "He turned me so I was facing him, and said, ‘I pay’. Then he carried me back to the table like a little boy." Sometimes children and grown-ups would see him and be terrified. Sometimes children would see him, shriek with glee, and begin clambering all over him. There is a scene at the end of Princess Bride where Robin Wright jumped out of the castle window, and Andre was to catch her at the bottom. The shot was set up for Robin to be lifted a foot. Maybe two. The first take, he caught her and gasped, suddenly white like paper, and almost fell to his knees. His back was bad. And getting worse. Andre once said to Billy Crystal, "We do not live long, the big and the small." Alas.

I know this doesn't look like anything much, but it's about 3 days of hard work clearing round hedge. Hedge plants have been enclosed in home-made deer fencing for couple of years. Now I reckon it's ready. Only halfway cleared yet...

Seeing a robin land by my window, I noticed how LEGGY they are compared with chaffinches, or my friends the coal tits. Nothing, of course, is more surprising than owl legs. Good day to you. (none of these fine pictures are mine, sorry)
robin perching on a holly twig, a few red berries to one side. it is standing like the Tories used to do on conference stages after some misguided PR person told them that putting their feet as far apart as they could was a power stance and everyone would do what they told them to. Anyway, the robin does it better than they did. LONG legschaffinch on similar twig, but shorter legsa beautiful fuzzy ball of a coal tit, on another twig, with its tiny delicate legsan outraged owl, claws clenched round the stupid sodding branch it has been given to stand on by its human, who is also lifting undercarriage feathers northwards to show its terrifyingly muscular and enormously long legs. I'd be outraged too. These are secret owl legs.

I regularly see a couple of videos of Mayor Mamdani when I open bluesky, about how lovely he has been to - well - everybody, in the last 24 hours. I don't live there. He's not my mayor. But he seems to be uncomplicatedly decent and that is giving me joy. He crouches down to talk to tiny children!
