Almost everyone I know who teaches is struggling with the effects of LLM on education. The thing to remember about this is that for its inventors and funders this is a feature not a bug.

This poem, this poet 🐐
An excerpt from Anne Carson's Glass Essay:

and I was downstairs reading the part in Wuthering Heights where Heathcliff clings at the lattice in the storm sobbing Come in! Come in! to the ghost of his heart's darling,
I fell on my knees on the rug and sobbed too.
She knows how to hang puppies, that Emily.
It isn't like taking an aspirin you know, I answer feebly.
Dr. Haw says grief is a long process.
She frowns. What does it accomplish
all that raking up the past?
Oh—I spread my hands
I prevail! I look her in the eye.
She grins. Yes you do.

My favourite Annie Dillard quote, from THE WRITING LIFE
Who will teach me to write? a reader wanted to know.

The page, the page, that eternal blankness, the blankness of eternity which you cover slowly, affirming time’s scrawl as a right and your daring as necessity; the page, which you cover woodenly, ruining it, but asserting your freedom and power to act, acknowledging that you ruin everything you touch but touching it nevertheless, because acting is better than being here in mere opacity; the page, which you cover slowly with the crabbed thread of your gut; the page in the purity of its possibilities; the page of your death, against which you pit such flawed excellences as you can muster with all your life’s strength: that page will teach you to write.

The generalisation of "less lethal" weapons among French police has been a defining feature of the last two decades. Originally confined to specialist units, their use has become commonplace leading to serious injury. This is the first time we have seen them deployed so extensively against children.

The damp hay or moss helps them keep breathing, & they don't run out of air in the barrel. So..that's how you move your live eels. Unless you're the Dutch. Then you put them in the holds of well ships and bring them over to England by the ton. But that's a different story. /fin
Meme. Drawing of a dutch eel ship. The ship is sailing on on choppy green seas, but without big swells. She doesn't have a name that we can see, but we can christen her "The Belugoulash." Her yellow sails are unfurled, and the leeboard is in the water. There are four figures on the ship: one manning the very large tiller, and the other other three standing around. It seems likely that they are staring at you, wondering WTF you are doing here, standing on choppy green water, looking at them. Likely they are preparing to sail away from you, and they will then agree to never speak of this moment again.

The drawing fades to white in a circle around the boat, as if they are appearing from out of a dream. Do you dream of eel ships? Or...is that just me?

Meme text at top reads:
"Gonna need a bigger..."
Image caption, below, reads:
"Dutch Eelboat"

It doesn't matter that Ireland only has miniscule fragments of native forests left, or that these are mostly in a dying state. When it comes to fixing that, everything takes forever and is piecemeal, if it even happens at all. It's always plenty of talk and written reports, but little or no action.

A crayon drawing of a white boy’s head with short brown hair and purple and orange rays emitting from his eyes, he is inside a square structure reminiscent of a window of theatre set with prance curtains, above a rectangle full of blue and green stars with red legs, and on either side are hands with their index fingers pointed

This is patronising and inaccurate. The young people I know who have emigrated , including family, found out exactly how the cost of living, housing and job prospects compared in other countries as part of making their decision.

For many, this is simply an accurate reflection of how things work in Ireland. We have a consistent agri policy that favours the most industrialised, richest farmers, but absolutely NOT the majority of farmers, rural communities, nature, the climate, or the wider society that pays for it all.
