Putting out a #bookhistory bat signal: does anyone have any resources on the history+production of ink balls/ball leathers? Finding it difficult to locate sources on preparing sheepskin for non-leather, non-parchment purposes…

@pointslikeaman.bsky.social (@aelagrand.bsky.social ) have been using the database recently, as I prep for teaching, just to broaden our sense of these roles. wanted to say thank you! it's wild seeing the 18th and 19th century history of cross-gender casting!

Academic friends: I have a delightful honors student who is hoping to produce a zine as an accompaniment to their thesis on transmasculine concepts in early modern drama. Do you have any good examples of academic arguments adapted to zines or other public-facing, DIY formats?

Someone has to explain to me the logic of 1) my thoughts on discourse are so necessary I must share them with the public; but 2) not important enough for me to actually author myself

there is very little purpose in promoting a poetry event in Canyon, Texas on here, but then there's little purpose in all human ambition. sorry, i've been reading hamlet.
ad for a poetry reading tonight (7 pm / Emilee Kinney and Chera Hammons). it's got a horse.

So, I really hope I get to tell this story in longer form in the near future, but it it’s burning a hole inside me. Most of it comes from an interview with Bob Hirst this weekend. Bob has been Exec Editor of the Mark Twain Project for 47 years, before which he was part of its staff for ~15. 1/16

Transcribing a 1660 treaty that, amongst other things, forced the English and French into agreeing to abolish the slave trade in Indigenous Caribbeans in exchange for peace. Quite remarkable, and I'm happy to stand corrected if anyone has ever come across a treaty like this.

HEY NERDS. I felt up some weird-ass 19thc US parchment this past week. Too thin. Poor finish. Yellow. Almost crumbly at edges. nearly CRACKED at creases! I literally looked for chain-lines. JUST SLIGHTLY too early to be vegetable parchment (acid-process invented 1847). Wth was this stuff?? Buckskin?

I’ve been teaching and writing about popular music for 30 years so I’m way too smart to fall for illusory concepts like “authenticity” but also just smart enough to know that there was always a carve out for Dolly.

Trying an adaptation of @zugenia.bsky.social's "Where Do You Know From" exercise for my 1st year writing class. Original assignment here: www.maifeminism.com/where-do-you... (full text of my assignment in ALT text if you want to steal it!)
Worksheet: Where are you coming from?
We’ll take a few minutes to think and then a few more minutes to write answers to a couple of these questions. Use full sentences.
1.	What are your intellectual interests? That is, what are you so curious about that you read, watch, research, practice, or talk to learn more? Your answer might be a particular question or field of study, but it could also be about related to your relationships, hobbies, or sports.

2.	How did you get interested in these ideas? Given only a few minutes, how would you tell the story of you starting to care about these questions? (Did it start with your family? With something you read or saw? A teacher or coach? Something else?)

3.	How have these interests changed your life? (Have you traveled to competitions all over the state? Picked a major to follow your interests? Filled your room with movie posters? Learned to cook Korean food?)

4.	How do you want your college experience to help you pursue the ideas that matter the most to you? (It could be through classes, through clubs, through competitions or performances, through the friends you make, the opportunities you take up, or something else entirely.)

I regret to inform you that these traditional college courses in AI are indistinguishable from the classrooms I sat in at for-profit colleges 15 years ago. Centralized curriculum & branding, technological control, “virtual” libraries, & bureaucratic alienation of labor.

One thing I keep thinking about re: Book 11 of The Odyssey is how the dead are just as eager for information from the living as the living are from the dead. At some point, definitely by Spiritualism’s ascendancy but earlier than that, the dead became omniscient, and all questions went one way.

@kqandrews.bsky.social this is the best google AI result for a book search i have ever gotten.
google search for animals i never saw.

the ai result: Most people never see rare, elusive animals like the deep-diving spade-toothed whale, the subterranean pink fairy armadillo, or the nocturnal pangolin because they live in extreme habitats, have tiny populations, or hide underground and in the deep sea

pictured: some ridiculous cute animal thing. looks like a failed pokemon.

i chose my grad school because the local coffee shop served coffee in glasses rather than mugs, and it seemed so cultured and fanciful. hot glass, you may know, hurts your hands and so in practice that meant i was constantly burning myself with the future i had imagined for myself. apt.

Anyway, your problem isn‘t finding the time to take notes. The problem is that taking notes is thinking and thinking has to be done by someone. women have been doing a lot of metacognition that looks like a task when it’s really thinking.
