The Nu Review mourns the loss of contributor Rachel Blau DuPlessis (1941-2026). Her poems “You” and “Manna Stories” appeared in Volume One Issue Seven. Baruch Dayan Ha’emet.
You
1. The finger, leaking blood
Is licked and swallowed back
Into the mammal of Me, not You.
Mouths and songs, and
It's like squinting
Into, living in, the moments Of nebula. Or folding and wobbling Quietly, where the tremendous Ur-dots entered
Not majesty, not over-view But dot to dot, and mite to mite And making troubles with their Shocking songs, blasts and blows.
And we can't explain it, what we do.
The excuse is, were just learning The "language" to talk of What we try and think we know.
But don't know who To be human are.
We bomb children under bridges.
We gun them in classrooms.
We starve them encircled by fencing.
Is this the we
That we must accede to?
Thus how to recite any ritual
Without revulsion is the question.
Then always someone is pointing and intoning
"Those are the enemy; destroy their trees and shrines!" Replying, "Huh! you're kidding"
Is apparently not
An adequate rejoinder.2. And then You is You.
Here or not, hosting there-fore And where-fore.
We are Us, and crosswise hope That we can cope with a Residual You, the stupid You, and Survive "all this."
I think were expected to glorify You With praise.
Us? Why us?
Weve barely got resigned To our evident fungibility.
And You! I mean, aren't You
"a wind that passes and does not come again," And whatever could we know about that?
But suppose the You is posited
As agreed upon beginning:
Like those hills from whence We stumbled, embittered,
Into the shadow realm of despair,
At sickening water from denatured skies, and strange dust across denuded lands, While the wealthiest finger Money Wads In their purse-hoard, and assume Their CreditRachel Blau DuPlessis •
Manna Stories
1.
Called Floating Wefts-this weaving with a thread angled through differently
(crosswise) (lemon color of delight) (readiness).
This touch of resistance crosses against the looms and toils of necessity.
Another pleasure, like the bread of angels!
And we have eaten the bread of angels gathered as it falls, gently, in quiet clumps.
Blazing like sunsets, but edible.
Save extras for later. Or tomorrow.
That's for, in case it forgets. It might forget us.
So we shouldn't depend on ourselves. Yes? No?2.
Floating Wefts release a yellow thread running sideways
across the gridded ladder of the pattern.
It's an aslant direction.
For us, the bread of angels!
It fell to us. For this,
grateful. We had been hungry, wandering, and endlessly stuck,
Swamp then desert. Not much of a choice.
So we folded the extras in our napkins.
Taking leftovers is all.
We do give thanks for the petit pains already fallen.
They are good, honey-flavored, trace of coriander. A bit unvaried, but no complaints.
Yet even when it falls, we worry.
We watch for tomorrow.
Will it, wont it, all about it.
Tcha tcha, tcha, gossip the stories.
Is it really forbidden to save some? Any?
One piece? Just two, maybe?
Even though we have also gorged on quail?

I am such a Kyla Houbolt fan. This came in the mail today. Deft poems that defy location. Each place feels familiar until it's all wrong. Kyla has done something really good here.
How to Spell a Prayer
(for A.S.

when the poet runs the coast
he holds down the land
for the love of the deeps
let the edge hold,
he hopes.
life prevails
in the shape it will
footsteps made
a sturdy seal
in spiral time
the kiss of waves
always a blessingThe cover of Kyla Houbolt's book Mapless: Poems. There is a badge that shows this book has won the 2026 Shine "Come As You Are" Book Prize. The background shows a map.

From @luaz.bsky.social’s new book *Mapless*
Darkside

I know a man who
knew a man whose cousin
knew the moon
he said every night it
just hung there
big old rock in the sky
waiting, waiting
for a way to fall.
Cover of Mapless (shows a map)
The first sleight-of-hand 1 ever learned was how to make a toothpick disappear, by way of a little piece of hidden scotch tape and some patter. Kyla Houbolt's poems in Mapless work a similar magic: woven in & through the ordinary, they are possessed of a guileless voice whose levity and directness of address belie the book's sly treatment of serious themes, too, from alcoholism and climate change to intractable political gridlock and the "horrible numbers" we live with daily. Houbolt's poems harness the imagination hopefully, carving out a collectivity however flawed it, or we, might be: "We're all magical trailer trash / setting the world to rights / or on fire, / whichever comes first." I love being in the ambit of Houbolt's "we" - even if the tape unsticks and the trick fails, there'll always be sunlight.

Book cover for Becalming by Aga Maksimowska, Rare Machines/Dundurn: Gosia, a high school chemistry teacher, travels to her native Poland to visit her estranged father. Back in Canada, meanwhile, her father-in-law — who has been more of a dad to her than her own — is dying of cancer. Away from her routine, Gosia questions everything in her life, including her long-term boyfriend, Peter. She feels stuck in the terrifying time of early adulthood, in her first grown-up job while managing student debt, monogamy, and existential dread. Gosia’s time in Poland gives her the chance to examine her life, and she finds herself pulled homeward to Canada, where she faces the fact that Peter’s father — like her own — is far from perfect. Can she love despite betrayal? Can she find hope in her fiery, complex love for Peter? Is there something more to this life that she didn’t even realize she had? https://www.dundurn.com/books_/t22117/a9781459756038-becalmingBook cover for Woodworking by Emily St. James (Zando | Crooked Media Reads): Shortlisted for Transgender Fiction in the Lambda Literary Awards (winners announced June 12th): https://lambdaliterary.org/awards/current-finalists/. An unforgettable and heartwarming book-club debut following a trans high school teacher from a small town in South Dakota who befriends the only other trans woman she knows: one of her students. https://zandoprojects.com/books/woodworking-paperbackBook cover for Moon’s Shadow by Shannon Blair, NineStar Press: When a delegation from his native Moonridge pays a surprise visit to Dawn’s Gate’s court, Moranthus is enlisted as a guard for Prince Orthenn: a man he once tried to kidnap. With Gerrick still employed as Orthenn’s double, Moranthus welcomes the opportunity to shield his lover from harm alongside the prince he protects. Then, a familiar face reappears and calls his loyalties into question once again. https://ninestarpress.com/product/moons-shadow/Book cover for An Inventory of Almost Everything by Elizabeth Marie Young, Subpress: In Young’s much-anticipated second poetry collection, the list form allows for the poetic embrace of a bewildering world that cannot be comprehended but can be endlessly explored as a catalogue of terrors, treasures and marvels. The poems in An Inventory of Almost Everything move back and forth, like the list form itself, between mundane reality and extravagant fantasy. They engage the form’s trajectory from Babylonian Star Catalogues to Buzzfeed’s “24 Tumblr Posts That Are Just Kind Of Weirdly Pure”. Here, the built-in rigidity of the form serves as a counterpoint to explorations of what is uncontainable and incomprehensible – consciousness, eroticism, spirituality. https://www.subpresscollective.com/an-inventory-of-almost-everything-by-elizabeth-marie-young/
