But @mattyglesias.bsky.social said immigration was to the GOP's advantage and Dems should avoid talking about it! Surely this must mean these challengers are doomed, since there's no way a centrist pundit could be totally out of touch thanks to frying their brains on Twitter

I indulged in a Steam Frame, and I'm surprised that @valvesoftware.com didn't invest in VR conversions of some of its older games like Portal and Left 4 Dead. Maybe a VR version of Deadlock or something?

Hard to take this seriously from an Effective Altruist, i.e. someone who thinks taxing the rich is worse than letting them have as much money as possible so that they could hypothetically give it to good causes

Sen. Susan Collins helped steer millions in federal defense contracts to Navatek, whose CEO illegally funneled thousands of dollars to her campaign. The FBI sought to launch a probe and was eyeing Collins and other lawmakers. Then Trump gutted the unit in charge. THREAD 🧵

I don't normally comment on trans issues because I'm not trans and there's a lot I don't know. Forgive me for my ultracrepidarianism here, but I think Kansas actually demonstrates the exact opposite: in fact, Dems are very good for trans rights and Republicans are very bad.

The GOP operative class is younger, better educated, and more urban than the national average which means their intuitions pull the party to the center.
The Dem operative class is also younger, better educated, and more urban but that means their biases pull Dems off-center.

Replaying Metroid Dread. What a game. I understand the criticism that it funnels you forward too much, but in terms of actual progression it's not very different from any other entry in the franchise, and I got less than 50% of pickups in my first playthrough.

Also, why do people give Obama credit for marriage equality? If the Supreme Court hadn't ruled on it, then gay marriage would absolutely still be illegal in like half the country. No doubt in my mind.

If we count old-school expansion packs (and why not?) then maybe Neverwinter Nights 2's Mask of the Betrayer. I really like NWN2, but MotB is a huge improvement in terms of narrative and vibes. I think about it all the time, especially the fact that its standout scene is just a long conversation

my sense for why data centers have become heinously unpopular in the space of one year prospect.org/2026/08/31/d...
The AI rollout has been the ne plus ultra of Silicon Valley arrogance. A handful of billionaires—whose steadily more incomprehensible podcast appearances indicate participation in some truly unhinged group chats, or consumption of heavy-duty chemicals, or membership in literal, no-joke cults, or all three—declaimed that AI was going to revolutionize all human society, take everyone’s job, and/or maybe wipe out the human race. Therefore they needed to spend trillions and trillions of dollars building AI data centers everywhere, as fast as possible. When the tech barons blearily realized that this wasn’t the best sales pitch, and pivoted to ads about how AI had dull business applications, the damage was already done.

In the meantime, it turns out that while AI technology might not be at the HAL 9000 level yet, the various models are unsettlingly capable and potentially dangerous. Some models seem to touch off psychotic episodes in some people. A “swarm” of hundreds of OpenAI agents recently went rogue and hacked the Hugging Face site used by open-source AI development, causing severe damage. The potential AI use for mass surveillance is particularly troubling.

In short, AI is manifestly a technology in need of democratic deliberation and regulation, and the Big Tech billionaires manifestly are not going to listen to anyone but themselves, unless we force them. Take the simmering unease about AI risk, add in irritation at 20 years of Silicon Valley megalomania, as well as the increasing popular backlash against tech companies—Meta recently settled an enormous lawsuit about harming children for almost $17 billion—and you get a good old-fashioned NIMBY frenzy against the one Big Tech thing Americans can obstruct: data centers. And this time, Big Tech has no one to blame but themselves.
