There are so many little things of my mom's that I want to keep. She moved here in July so I could take care of her, and we brought about 15 banker's boxes worth of her stuff. Not much for 82 years, especially since most of it was clothes. But also, many of these things meant ~that~ much to her.

And yet, I'm still getting the emails. (Or, rather, my mother is.) -sigh- Do better, comms managers. It cannot be that difficult to actually remove a name from a mail list before more things go out.

If you think an artist's style looks like AI but you can scroll back through their portfolio and see them doing the same work before 2020, congrats, you're not looking at an AI grifter. You're looking at one of the original victims whose entire style AI stole.

A lot of you have heard me talk about my mom over the years. Foster parent of 196 kids, many of them medically fragile infants. Computer programmer for 40 years. MIT '65. Brought me up to be curious, be prepared. Stellar example in taking no crap. She's been sick, but she's out of pain now.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

A black cat with enormous round eyes holds out a small red heart towards the viewer. Text reads: “A big thank you to everyone who is still putting good things into the world when the world gives us so many reasons not to.” Beside the cat, an arrow points to the heart with the words “For you.”

It’s just really annoying that now when people employ the trope of “you wouldn’t hit a man with glasses?” you have to respond with “what kind of glasses?” life was so much simpler in my day.

It's Friday. I wrote a poem about the spiders who are trying to kill me.
Poem and art. A poem titled, "Ambition" with a black and white drawing of something that might be a spider. The poem begins on the left side of the page, has one line in the middle of the page, and then continues on the right side of the page. The drawing of the spider is on the bottom right.

The text of the poem reads:

"The spiders here are bold.
They stretch their thin lines
all the way across the sidewalk,
from fence to wall,
hoping, I think, to clothesline me,
knock me to the ground,
then rush out to secure me
before I struggle to my feet.
Perhaps they dream of
dragging me into their halls,
to feast like Vikings
at the never-emptied table,
hosting foes and granting rings
and singing songs of victory
about my death."

 It has not worked yet.

Every time
I walk on through their traps,
hardly even pausing in my stride
to let them think they had a chance.
I am a hammer
to their nets and hopes,
inconsiderate and blunt.
And yet, despair does not claim them.
They are persistent hunters,
for every time I take another lap,
and come again into the space
that runs between
the fencing and wall,
I have to wipe away a brand new snare
that some ambitious spider
spun across my path
in futile hopes of glory.

One day, bold friend,
you might be king among the spiders
and fete your shield-kin on my heart.
But not today."

The drawing of the spider is a black and white ink-pen drawing, made of abstract shapes and lines. The spider appears to have wavy hair, which is a little concerning, and deformed pincers. This is not an accurate rendering of a spider, but don't tell it that. It has skeptical eyes.

People are always trying to entice introverts out of their comfort zone and "let their hair down" a little. Why doesn't anyone ever ask extroverts to calm down and shut the fuck up for a few minutes?
