I haven’t been able to stop thinking about a scene in the Reacher spinoff series Neagley, about Reacher’s best friend Neagley, where Neagley says her dad used to play her the Super Bowl Shuffle every night before bed and she calls it “the Chicago Lullaby”

I thought this was just beautiful. Kurt Vonnegut takes a walk to mail a letter:
She calls out, “Where are you going?” And I say, “I am going out to get an envelope.” And she says, “Well, you’re not a poor man. Why don’t you buy a thousand envelopes? They’ll deliver them, and you can put them in a closet.” And I say, “Hush.”

I go next to the postal convenience center down the block at the corner of 47th Street and Second Avenue. The woman behind the counter says, “Thirty-nine cents for a stamp.” I say, “I only brought thirty-seven. When did that change?” She looked at me a long time. “Thirty-seven isn’t enough.” “Well that oughta be enough for one envelope,” I said. The line was getting longer.

The lady moved her hand into her coat. I knew this routine. I backflipped behind the man behind me in line, wrapping my elbow around his throat as I landed. By the time the stamp seller had unloaded her clip, I had full cover. The gentleman’s body dropped to the floor, six holes smoking. The package he was carrying fell to the floor with a heavy clunk. Whatever was in there, it would do.

I rolled my foot over the cardboard and did a “flick up” as they call it in soccer. I bounced the package once or twice on the back of my foot as the mail lady reloaded, then I launched it high and spun 360 to deliver my patented “Rising Phoenix kick”. The package caught fire as it shattered through the protective plexiglass window and struck the woman’s head with all the force and hatred I had learned to channel in my grueling tutelage under five fallen Wudang masters in my youth. The lady’s body exploded off of her bones, leaving just a blackened skeleton spinning in her office chair. “So it goes,” I said, but no one laughed. I guess they weren’t big readers.

And I go home. And I have had one hell of a good time.

We are dancing animals. How beautiful it is to get up and go out and do something. We are here on Earth to fart around. Don’t let anybody tell you any different.

peaches tonight was easily one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen. a room full of people with non Euclidean genders and haircuts that would mindfreak a conservative. before coming on stage they played dolly parton’s 9 to 5 and everyone lost their shit

the only lasting 9/11 memory i have is when the budweiser ad with the kneeling clydesdales came on during the super bowl and i said "those horses are praying to mecca" and my friend's uncle got so mad that he had to go in the backyard

What can't be forgotten about 9/11 is the ocean of BS controversies and cancel campaigns in the aftermath, like the backlash to this 2002 Starbucks ad that was accused of portraying the towers as cups and insects as the airliners (???)

Large print of an illustration of small animals in nurse outfits caring for Bill the lizard who went up the chimney in Alice in Wonderland. A beetle is carrying Bill’s tail. Hedgehogs with a stretcher approach, snails rubberneck in the foreground. Many pansies in the midground. More unsettling than charming tbh

today on the streetcar the man sitting across from me ended what seemed like an important business call with “well, as snoopy would say: gawrsh!” then he frowned, looked at me, mouthed “goofy?”, I nodded, then he said “I’m just being goofy!” and hung up, and gave me a thumbs up

so I spoke with Bridget, and she directly said that yes, they were “inspired” by the work we did for Alex. I tried my best to emphasize that copying the exact words someone else wrote and presenting them as your own goes beyond “inspiration.” She agreed to change these bits in future material 🙃

Lynda Barry did not squeeze your heart and simultaneously explain the point of all art with the barest of line drawings so you could tell me that AI is "inevitable."
HOW TO LOOK AT ART by Lynda Barry

In the first panel, a dog-headed woman, a mother, looks at a painting in the "Madonna with Baby Jesus" vein. A small blobby child is standing next to her.

Mother: IM NOT SURE HOW TO LOOK AT ART.
Child: WHATS SPOSTA HAPPEN?

In the second panel the dog-headed mother holds up her hands (paws?) trying to explain to the child.

Mother: SOMETHING BIG. A REVELATION.
SUDDENLY YOU JUST UNDERSTAND.

In the third panel dog-headed mother goes back to looking at the painting. The child holds up their arms to be lifted.

Mother: NOT SURE HOW TO MAKE IT HAPPEN
Child: HOW BOUT LIFT ME UP SO I CAN SEE BETTER

In the last panel, the dog-headed mother is holding the child, their position mirrored by the Madonna and baby Jesus in the painting.

Thanks to all of you who reached out after I had to put my chimp down. Yes it was hard to lose him, we were raised together and he was more of a sibling than a pet. But the hardest part? Was learning he spoke perfect english from him begging us not to go through with it as we buzzsawed off his head.

I don’t want to get into the bluesky drama du jour. but it is so funny to try to win an unrelated argument with a guy by saying “well you’ve never spoken out about palestine!” and then when he says “actually I helped raise $73k of direct aid for PCRF” respond with “why are you bragging about it??”
