GDT's reddit AMA spitting fire www.reddit.com/r/movies/com...
reddit comment:

Hello! Did you intend the ending of Pan’s labyrinth to be real or in Ofelia’s mind?

Guillermo Del Toro's reply:

My interpretation, and it's exclusively mine, is that it's real.

Because there's two things. One is what people call “The Shining Question.” The Shining Question is, Who opens the door for Jack to get out of the fridge? And Ofelia is in an attic with a guard outside her door, and she draws the door with the magic chalk, and she shows up in the labyrinth. So, the only way she could have gone into the labyrinth is the magic chalk. And the flower is real at the end. The flower that blooms in the dead tree. And the reason I think it’s real is because—and this is why I'm in favor of the human factor in art—I think that art does transform the world. You know?

Think about it for a second. One of the goals, with all this movement, is to make you believe that art is vulgar. That art is nothing special, and anybody can do art. That is like me telling you that I'm faster at running than Usain Bolt but I “run” in my motorcycle. Well, that's not the same. That’s not the same at all.

Art is important, and they want you to believe it isn't. It's part of the idea of control. The goal is not to have artificial intelligence. The goal is to foster natural stupidity. The goal is to foster you not looking for answers, and to trust yourself entirely to an engine. Look at the way we are dipping our toes into these things. We are starting to ask the machine, Is this true? For now, there's a correlation between reality and what the answers of the machine are. For now. But soon, we won't even investigate further. We will be told it's true. And if the machine is in the hands of somebody who should not be trusted, then your reality has been completely and utterly fucked. Because your intelligence ends at the question. You don't seek the answer. It's given to you.Q: You recently mentioned that AI creates 'semi-compelling screensavers' and that you'd 'rather die' than use it. As a filmmaker who relies heavily on practical effects and creature design, what do you think is the biggest thing lost when a computer generates an image instead of a human hand?

GDT:

The three quarters of the process that gave you the chance to think of the idea that people don't think about without that process. Meaning, AI can get you to the middle really fast, but there's a dialectic with the process that gets you to that top 10%. I'll give you an example with the Pale Man.

We sculpted it as an old man, with a face. And then I said, Let's take out the face. This happened because I saw a photo of a manta ray and the poster for Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm. That combination, which happened at two different times during a week or a month, are not permutations that are chemically part of an equation. They are alchemy. And then I said, Take out the face, and then I said, Let's put the eyes on the hands. This triangulation happens because I spent a month or two months living with the idea of this creature. And it's not linear.

AI is like a super-fast engine that makes semi-sentient permutations of things that are already done. Creation is things that have never been done. Coming to exist.

And the second thing is the loss of the apprenticeship that one has as an artist. You're never a master; you're always an apprentice. This is a kinship I have with, for example, Chris Nolan. When he showed me The Odyssey, there’s a scene when Matt Damon is floating in the stormy ocean and I asked him—because we were talking about practical effects, and how great it is and that we both always use a maquette or a model—and I asked him, How did you do it? He said, “We put him in a storm in the ocean.”

And you're gonna find that 30% of a great image occurs accidentally. You know, either a drop of water hits the lens, or the camera shakes. I remember when in 1993, '94, Jim…

Nope. There is no animus. You're playing with an automated algorithm that's being assigned too many privileges with outcomes based on probability. That's like "shit I lost control of this giant bolder I was rolling down a crowded street, it must be magic."

Statistical pattern matching coupled with granting the software the ability to do shit you'd never ordinarily allow a script to do is causing fuckups. People aren't losing control of "AI," they're bad at their jobs.

The Drinkers - 1890 botfrens.com/collections/46/content…
During his time in the Asylum of Saint-Paul in Saint-Rémy, a small town near Arles, Vincent van Gogh made a number of copies of the work of artists he admired, which freed him from having to produce original compositions and allowed him to concentrate instead on interpretation. For this image, Van Gogh copied a wood engraving from Honoré Daumier’s Drinkers, a parody on the four ages of man. The exaggerated figure types capture Daumier’s characteristic humor and convey his sad message about the horrors of alcoholism. The greenish palette may well be an allusion to the notorious alcoholic drink absinthe.

Since Covid is in the news again for... reasons, two things strike me from 2020: 1.) How news outlets used the phrase "So Americans can get back to work" during lockdowns. 2.) The behavior change among certain people the minute we knew who was dying/disproportionately at risk of dying from Covid.

Bare Witnessing:
Reflections on
Changes in Myself after Five Months of Genocide in Palestine
Just now
I want to say a few words about the changes I've noticed in myself from watching the Gaza genocide unfold. I hope this isn't self-indulgent; I have talked extensively on the situation for Palestinians in Gaza and will continue to do so, as this is clearly the most important thing about this moment. But these changes I feel in myself I also see happening in other people, so I would like to reflect on them a bit in case others can relate, so that we may better understand what permanent changes to our societies have been wrought by watching these live-streamed horrors for five months and seeing everyone's reactions thereto, our own included.Since October 7th I've certainly been shocked to my core by the violence, the cruelty of the Israeli genocide in Gaza and the West Bank, the endless stream of horrific videos and images of precious children now turned to incomprehensible masses of flesh and bone, headless babies, someone's whole world difficult to look at, as well as the psychopathic comments of Zionists around the world that make my skin crawl, mocking dead and orphaned children-that all has changed me, maybe in necessary ways but surely not for the better. I can feel the weight of it all even now as I write. I can feel that it is never leaving me. That I have lost something I won't ever get back-perhaps innocence, perhaps something more important than that. But I knew evil like this existed.I guess I was less sure about good, and so overwhelmingly that has been what has surprised me most about this, and probably has effected the greatest changes in me. First, the heroic Palestinians in Gaza: the armed resistance and the
doctors, journalists, ambulance drivers, nurses, fishermen, parents, siblings, the scores of men and boys digging survivors out of the rubble with their bare hands after each bombing, the women and girls sewing diapers for newborns out of recycled PPE. I've never seen whole generations of a people resisting together like this before, I had never seen solidarity like that, and I don't really know how to say what it has meant to me to see this fierce, unshakable, determined resistance to genocide, from the armed fighter running up to an IOF tank with only a grenade and a prayer to God, to the little girl comforting her younger sister in the crowded hospital after their parents were killed.Seeing the bravery, the righteous defiance of an evil, colonial nuclear power that wants to erase them and drive them from their land... I don't have
the words. I cry whenever I think about it. I'm crying right now. Maybe one day I'll be able to talk about it intelligibly. Not yet. But I'm very glad for whatever change it has brought in me; I can tell I need it, and will need it again soon. I think maybe it's hope, or
something similar. That's part of it. It's also a certain heightened awareness, an easier fellow-feeling; the nerves of my moral organ are more sensitive now. The roots of my heart twist and clutch their way through the whole world now, and I feel the tugs of others' suffering even more keenly than before. But more than that, I can't say.

The shooting happened on the level above the ballroom where the White House Correspondents Association dinner was.
I don't think people hearing about this -- or even those of us in the room -- realized how far from the president, VP and other guests this incident was. It was on another floor, up some stairs and several sets of security away.
Because the Washington Hilton's hotel and other public spaces were open for other functions, the entire building wasn't secured by the Secret Service, just the specific areas where the WHCA dinner was held, law enforcement officials told @CBSNews

NYT: US Fertility Rates Drop to Another Record Low

The fertility rate has been falling since 2007, in large part because of a plunge among teenagersThere are some clues in the age breakdown: The fertility rate for teenagers dropped by 7 percent from 2024’s figure, setting another record low for the group. Since 2007, the rate for teenagers is down by 72 percent, and since 1991, when teenage fertility rates were at a high, the rate is down by 81 percent.
