The effects of changing electoral systems from first-past-the-post to single transferable vote: causal evidence from New Zealand - Public Choice
The literature on electoral systems suggests that a shift from first-past-the-post (FPP) to the Single Transferable Vote (STV) should lead to several changes in electoral outcomes, including increased...

The image is of a four panel comic.
In panel one, we see a man sitting at a restaurant table. He is sweating. He says "Y-you have beautiful eyes".
The second panel zooms in on the man's face. He says, "I'm sorry. I'm just so nervous."
In panel three we see that a biblically accurate angel is sitting on the other side of the table.
In panel four we zoom in on the angel's face, who says "BE NOT AFRAID".

OH MY GOD “”There’s one case where a macaque monkey formed a very strong social bond with a chicken that accidentally appeared in its enclosure,” Dr. Grueter said, & another where a troop of capuchin monkeys adopted a baby marmoset…it seems to be a common phenomenon in both wild & captive animals”

We aren’t the only animals that like to take care of other species. A new study finds that the roots of keeping a pet may stretch deep into our primate past.

21/ For the West, the useful question isn't blanket decoupling, it's sequencing — we can't reduce dependence on China everywhere at once. That isn't a values question, it's a capacity constraint on the policy system itself.

20/ The world is unlikely to accept Chinese dominance across every supply chain, whatever the underlying cause. That reaction is coming regardless of how precisely the overcapacity term gets defined.

19/ There's also a soft-power problem the paper doesn't solve. China needs buyers for all this output, and insisting that nothing is wrong does little to manage how the export surge is received abroad.

9/ At the same time, Chinese competitiveness in these sectors is often genuine. Two decades of sustained R&D, dense supplier clusters, brutal domestic price competition — these produce real advantages, not just subsidized ones.

I wrote this the other day arguing AI means the humanities become even more important in an age where AI can solve questions that are defined and data rich, leaving the wicked issues where we can’t even agree on the nature of the problem… www.ft.com/content/fbde...
Given AI's exponentially growing ability to solve well-defined, data-rich problems, it is plausible that employers will place more of a premium on the skills the humanities offer, such as critical and creative thinking.
Anthropic's co-founder Daniela Amodei recently said: "I actually think studying the humanities is going to be more important than ever... this idea that there are things that make us uniquely human - understanding ourselves, understanding history, understanding what makes us tick
- I think that will always be really, really important."

Europe is warming twice as fast as the global average. Climate change makes extreme fire weather more likely and intense — drying fuels, extending seasons, and turning landscapes into tinderboxes. Wildfires are burning more land, more fiercely, from California to Canada to the Mediterranean.

But of course these games aren't about fighting peer opponents, they're about the fantasy of leveraging endless firepower against opponents too weak to meaningfully fight back. And the fantasy that just dumping more munitions from the air can actually produce victory - it hasn't yet.

Smile it’s the weekend! A liitle blue hippo made by an Egyptian artisan around 4,000 years ago! 🦛 ❤️ Decorated with river plants and lotus flowers, blue faience hippos are associated with the life-giving Nile and rebirth. Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows an ancient Egyptian ‘roaring’ hippo statuette made of Egyptian blue faience, a ceramic material made of ground quartz. The hippo is seated with head at left, and turned to front. The hippo’s original tusks (the top incisors and lower canine teeth are known as tusks), are missing, so it looks as if the hippo is smiling. The blue body is decorated in black with stylised images of Nile river plants such as water weed and lotus flowers. This decoration depicts the hippo’s marsh habitat as well as having layers of symbolism associated with regeneration e.g. lotus flowers open with the sun in the morning and close at night symbolising rebirth. Height 7.5 cm, length 12.5 cm. On display Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen.
