Now, you might say, "What about all the knowledge we'd lose if we push all the abusive geniuses out of academia?!" But I'd counter and say, "Well, what about the knowledge we've already lost from the budding scholars whose careers they've derailed with their abuse?"

The statistical probability regurgitron is not a tool that will help you learn to think, write, come up with ideas, or clearly identify what YOU find interesting, useful, or worth researching more deeply. It is a ball and chain preventing you from learning how to do any of these things. Sorry!

I've seen people trying to defend it today by saying "No, no, I just use it to brainstorm, bounce ideas, I do the actual writing" and with all the kindness in the world I need to tell you: if there is a stage of writing you are not good at, you need to get good, not use the plagiarism machine.

From a piece I wrote about how every death is not a "death" but a murder. And how the conditions have been purposefully created to cause massive suffering, including but not in any sense limited to systemic murder.
All are in cramped conditions, with cells made for 66 housing 150. Others made for 6 hold 40. They sleep on the concrete floors, using their shoes as pillows. Lights are often on 24 hours a day (this is widely considered a form of torture). There is often only one toilet in the room for all the people, and it is filled with feces (which can also amount to torture).

Across the country, detention camps are known for purposefully making the facilities as cold as possible. Their food and water is often contaminated. They do not receive enough of either. Disease spreads as a matter of due course.

Medical care is denied as a standard practice. A diabetic woman is denied insulin, then has to be hospitalized. A man who is sick is told he is “faking it” and eventually discovers he has Tuberculosis. On and on.

When people inevitably undergo mental distress, they are put into solitary confinement. When they protest their conditions, they are beaten, flash grenades are thrown in their cells, and are often then moved to new facilities as punishment.

Women and transgender people in particular are regularly sexually abused, with reports of groping, forced oral sex, and more. Men are left shackled at times for entire days, sometimes either not given food or being forced to eat “like dogs” by sticking their faces into their plates. In many camps, they are engaged in forced labor. If they do not work, they may be punished with solitary confinement.

And, of course, there are the murders. While 8 people have been killed on the streets by ICE since Trump took power, 32 have died in ICE facilities. Most have died due to the purposeful medical neglect in the facilities, as well as suicide (again, due to purposeful mental health neglect). As well as actual murderous acts. But it’s all murder really.

My take on why many (white) progressives say that Israel is making the US go to war is that they would very much prefer that to be the case than to have to examine their own culpability and participation in America's white supremacist militaristic reality. So much easier if it's outsiders.

Today we remember the millions of lives lost during the Holocaust, the millions of stories of individual bravery and heroism, and one of the enduring lessons of one of the darkest chapters in human history: that while humans create beautiful things and are full of compassion, we're also capable of unspeakable brutality. And we promise never again to go down the darkest path.

The US Holocaust Museum being more outraged by Tim Walz saying that, like Anne Frank, children today are in hiding from armed agents of the state, than they are about the fact that children are in hiding from armed agents of the state, is why Holocaust remembrance culture is in crisis.
Tweet from the US Holocaust Memorial Museum: "Anne Frank was targeted and murdered solely because she was Jewish. Leaders making false equivalencies to her experience for political purposes is never acceptable. Despite tensions in Minneapolis, exploiting the Holocaust is deeply offensive, especially as antisemitism surges."

Most of this year's ICE budget comes from last year's reconciliation bill. House Democratic leaders discouraged its members from offering amendments eliminating that funding. Didn't want the party to come across as anti-ICE. www.stephensemler.com/p/ice-budget...
ICE budget set to triple to $30 billion in 2026. Trump request: $11 billion, plus estimated $19 billion from reconciliation bill. The red line chart shows gradual increase in the ICE budget from 2016 to 2025, before skyrocketing to a projected $30 billion in 2026. 2026 estimate based on Trump's budget request and White House documents stating that 25% of reconciliation homeland security funding is for 2026.
