I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

Let's all take a moment to understand how self-serving it is for OpenAI, Anthropic and other execs of big hyperscalers to talk of slowing things down.
1. LLMs are not AI and won't be AGI. There is nothing AI to slow down.
2. Competition is coming up fast, slowing benefits incumbents.
3. IPOs need hype & puffery; "we are so awesome it could become dangerous" is hype & puffery
4. Cover for real uncontrollable slowing growth as IPOs look to be pushed out

There are, roughly, three popular (ideologically received) conceptions of anarchism: 1. Chaos! Destruction! Violence! 2. Punk, as the aestheticised, defanged version of 1.: a cute angry kittie to 1.'s uncaged panther. 3. A commune of primitivist hippies, slovenly and unambitious.

I mean...we are talking about a magazine which had a cover story titled "The Roots of Muslim Rage" in a not-at-all-distant past. www.currentaffairs.org/news/the-wor...
"I must repeat: where are the editors? Did they not query the writer: “Is there any reason other than stereotypes about Arabs that it would be surprising for a Houthi to be ‘neat-looking’ rather than a ‘swaggering tribesman’?” Apparently this question never entered anyone’s mind throughout the editorial process, which tells you a great deal about that process. (Jon Schwarz points out in Citations Needed that racist stereotypes about Arabs are nothing new in the publication, which in a 1949 report from Israel described the Palestinian Arabs of Jaffa as “foul, diseased, smelling, rotting, and pullulating with vermin and corruption, slinking about the streets, flatfooted, with loose, dribbling lower lip.”

Then, in 1990, there was the cover story by Bernard Lewis, an Armenian genocide denier, called “The Roots of Muslim Rage,” which proposed the idea of a “clash of civilizations” before Samuel Huntington did. Lewis argued that “the Muslim”—for there is only one—was enraged by “his loss of domination in the world,” including “emancipated women and rebellious children,” and, inspired by “ancient beliefs and loyalties,” decided to lash out at “alien, infidel, and incomprehensible forces that had subverted his dominance.” It did not, of course, interview or quote a single Muslim person. This edition of the magazine became one of its all-time bestsellers.)

It is worth imagining how we would react to a magazine that published the kinds of caricatures and generalizations about “the Jew” that The Atlantic published about “the Muslim.”"

We'll never have exhaustive analysis of 'AI', not as defined by any epistemology widely legible to anglophone academia, but we've had sufficient (as defined by rigour alone and not accounting for the complexity of creating *effective* articulation) analysis to substantiate 'AI' for a while.

It will never stop being funny to me that the street fighter subreddit has a much better, well reasoned ai policy vis a vis literally all universities.
Hi, thanks for posting! We do appreciate you thinking of us even though we have to moderate.

Our stance on all AI generated content (Images, Video, Voiceovers, and whatever else LLM based AI gets up to in the future):

At best, they are approximations of street fighter characters as the AI has no clue what it is trying to create. Because of this, there is no street fighter content so they are not allowed. (rule 1)

Also, they aren't allowed per our source rule. As AI sources cannot be tracked, we must assume that they use uncredited sources in the learning data. (rule 5)

Finally, AI images, video, text, and voiceovers are barely any different than posting a screenshot of a google search. The level of effort is so low that we consider it spam (rule 3).

Because of these reasons, AI art and other AI content is not allowed.

If you would like to contact the moderators about this removal, you can do so here.

Landmark German ruling declares Google's AI Overviews are Google's own words and makes it liable for false answers
A German regional court has ruled that Google is directly liable for the content of its AI search overviews. According to the court, previous limited liability protections for search engine operators don't apply to AI overviews. In this case, Google's AI had falsely linked two publishers to fraud and made claims that didn't appear in any of the linked sources. The ruling could set a precedent for AI-generated content liability worldwide.

Another interesting (probably under-)estimate of the total GHGs associated with LLM generation of computer code 0.25 MTCO2-e today 6.25 TCO2-e by this time next year + the real problem: companies keep all this secret. So we have are forced to guess (sloppily) www.cnaught.com/blog/its-tim...
What we found
250,000 metric tonnes today: As we write this, we believe that AI coding agents are responsible for emitting approximately 250,000 tonnes of carbon per year. That’s equivalent to burning more than 278,000,000 pounds of coal or fully charging more than 18,000,000 smart phones.
‍
25x annualized growth rate: Our research in public GitHub repos shows that average daily commits by agents in March, 2026 were 5x higher than in September, 2025. That kind of growth annualizes to 25x. While this is astronomical, it doesn’t strike us as out of line: Anthropic, the creator of Claude Code, reported 80x annualized growth in Q1 2026.
‍
6,250,000 metric tonnes by this time next year: 250,000 tonnes is meaningful; 6,250,000 tonnes is equivalent to the annual emissions of fast fashion giant Shein and 10% greater than the entire state of Vermont. That is where we will be in a year if the growth we are seeing continues. This was way harder than it should have been. Too much of this information is siloed in private organizations and proprietary tools, and the pace of change is so fast that it is hard to capture. But our conclusion is nonetheless straightforward: a reasonable approach shows that the emissions from coding agents are large, growing astronomically, and deserve our immediate focus.

One *cannot* just move on from the Anthropic question when the very substance of this encyclical letter was written with the tech industry talking point. One simple example below: 👇 www.vatican.va/content/leo-....
98. It is appropriate to preface this discussion with two considerations. First, any statement regarding Al risks becoming quickly outdated, given the remarkable pace at which these systems are developing. Second, all of us, including those who design them, possess only a limited understanding of their actual functioning. Indeed, current Al systems are more "cultivated" than "built," for developers do not directly design every detail, but instead create a framework within
which the intelligence "grows." As a result, fundamental scientific aspects — such as the internal representations and computational processes of these systems — remain, at present, unknown. There thus emerges an urgent need for a twofold commitment: on the one hand, a deepening of scientific research; on the other, the exercise of moral and spiritual discernment.

6.1 Women hold up half the Skynet
By paraphrasing Mao Zedong — who intended “the govern-
ment to raise women’s status [by] abolish[ing] the feudal sys-
tem which holds women in bondage [as well as] mobiliz[ing]
women to participate in the labor force” (Li 2000, p. 31) —
and making reference to the Terminator media franchise’s su-
perintelligent AI antagonist, we want to underline that women
have contributed both to their own emancipation and to their
own disenfranchisement by participating in (all three overlap-
ping definitions of) AI (given in the Introduction).14 This may
seem, at first blush, to be a negative perspective wherein we
are not able to imagine ourselves out of repeating the leitmo-
tif this paper is focused on, forever iterating over attempts to
free ourselves from capitalist patriarchy but never escaping the
infinitely nested loops within which the current technopolitical
landscape encircles us. That is to say, women are recursively
being called upon, and calling on themselves, to carve out and
carry out intellectually demanding roles, such as human com-
puter and programmer only to be automated away, masculinised
out, forgotten about, or all the above. But this is not the only
way forward, we propose we can halt this problem
