People think hospice care only happens in hospices. It doesn't. Our nurses work in A&E to help people get the end of life care they need. They’re in GP practices identifying people who need care and helping them get it. They visit people’s homes to manage pain and to support families. 💛

Terminally ill people deserve financial security. 💛 People with a terminal illness, no matter their age, should be able to access a State Pension level of income, so everyone has the money they need to live well in their final months. #PensionAwarenessWeek

Nobody who is dying should be worrying about a council tax bill. 💔 We’re calling on councils in England to exempt people with less than 12 months to live.

🚨 New data show significant gaps in end of life care in hospitals across England. Too many people are missing out on conversations about what matters most to them, and inequalities in care remain. The government must act.

🚨 Thousands of terminally ill people are missing out on fast-tracked access to benefits payments they’re entitled to. This isn’t right. Everyone diagnosed with a terminal illness should be told what financial support is available – and how to access it quickly.

❗One assessment for PIP costs around £282. Yet people living with a terminal illness are at risk of being re-assessed every three years. That’s public money being used on an outcome that rarely changes AND it adds stress and admin for people who are seriously ill. It doesn’t make sense.

The UK government has already acknowledged the crisis in end of life care. It’s even set out plans to improve it. But plans alone won't fix the problem. Without dedicated investment, little will change. So Andy Burnham, are you with us? 💛
A letter written to Andy Burnham from Marie Curie, which reads:

"Dear Andy Burnham, Nobody should have to watch someone they love die without proper care and support.

But right now, that's what's happening.

Nearly 1 in 3 people die without proper end of life care.

People’s final days are spent in distress and families are left to cope alone.

We know that a better end of life is possible.

But to get there, services need investment.

Are you with us?

Sincerely, Marie Curie"

🚨 MPs head off for their summer break today. While Parliament is away, 22,000 people in England will die without the care they need. Terminally ill people deserve better. We should all get to spend our final days comfortable, free of avoidable pain and cared for.

Financial anxiety is real. Now imagine living with an illness that’s only going to get worse and you rely on financial support to live. Yet you’re still being asked to prove how ill you are, again and again. This is why we need a more compassionate social security system.

Everyone, everywhere deserves good end of life care. It should be available in people’s homes, in hospitals, GP surgeries and care homes. Care should be available at night, on weekends, and before families reach breaking point. Repost if you agree. 💛

We can’t go on like this. 💔 The next Prime Minister must be the one to fix end of life care for good. Everyone deserves to spend their final days comfortable and cared for, where they want to be and with the people who matter most to them.

Hi James Murray, congratulations on your new job 👋 As the new Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, we need you to urgently prioritise fixing end of life care. You have the power to make sure everyone has care and comfort in their final days of life - which is what we all deserve. 💛

Let’s fix end of life care, together.” The two yellow boards share personal statements about experiences of end of life care, with the Marie Curie logo in the corner.Close-up of a yellow Marie Curie campaign board, with a quote from a campaigner that reads: “Everyone should have the right to excellent holistic end of life care in a place of their choosing. OVER 3,000 people in Wales have ONE message for the new Welsh Government… ⏰ It’s time to fix end of life care. Too many people aren’t getting compassionate, dignified care and support in their final days of life. This is unacceptable. It has to change now – nawr.
Three people stand outdoors in front of the Senedd building in Wales, behind four large yellow boards displaying the number “3,250.” Each number board is filled with small printed first names representing everyone who signed an open letter. The people hold yellow signs with campaign messages about end of life care. One person wears a yellow Marie Curie T-shirt, another wears a pink blazer, and another wears a navy nurse uniform with a Marie Curie logo. Steps and a few seated people are visible in the background.

We welcome new research published today by @mariecurieuk.bsky.social which shows that almost 1 in 3 people in England are dying without the care they need – that’s around 170,000 people each year. This is unacceptable. Our Chief Executive @jamescsanderson.bsky.social responds to this new research:
Quote from Sue Ryder Chief Executive, James Sanderson: "We welcome this piece of research from Marie Curie. How we die matters, but most of us don't think about it until it happens to someone we know. None of us want our loved ones to die in a hospital corridor or in the back of an ambulance. The memories we make once we know that someone we love is dying should be treasured and that time should be filled with love."Continued quote from Sue Ryder Chief Executive, James Sanderson: "To think instead that people are experiencing pain, trauma and guilt is extremely distressing. This reality is happening to too many people. Enough people to fill Wembley Stadium nearly twice over, every year. This is something our government and our sector cannot tolerate any longer. If the Government's plan for end-of-life care, its Modern Service Framework, is shaped in partnership with the palliative care sector, then collectively I believe we can change this. Death deserves better."
